Woman freed after days trapped in recycling bin

PEMBERTON TWP., N.J. - March 3, 2009 (WPVI) -- Police in New Jersey had to free woman in her 70s after she was trapped in her home's recycling bin for approximately several days.

Neighbors called the Pemberton Township Police Tuesday before 8 a.m., saying they hadn't seen Mary Davis, 76, for about 3 days.

When police arrived, they entered her home and found Davis in the garage stuck in a recycling bucket that officers described as a medium-sized trash can. Police got Davis out of the bucket while medics arrived.

Police say she was responsive and happy to be found, and that her dog apparently knocked her off balance sending her rear-first into the recycling bin.

Davis was taken for treatment to Virtua Hospital.

Thank goodness her neighbors noticed she was missing for a while. I'm glad she is going to be okay. Bless her heart!

Small bin, big butt? At least it was the recycling and not the garbage.

Police said a Burlington County woman's cocker spaniel knocked her off balance and caused her to fall into a recycling bucket in her garage, where she was rescued Tuesday by neighbors who hadn't seen her in three days.

But Mary Davis, 76, offered a different explanation yesterday from her bed at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly.

She said a man and woman broke into her house in Pemberton Township on Sunday through a dog entrance. The man put her in the bucket and locked the door to the garage, she said.

"I had a cell phone, but it was up there in my bedroom," said Davis. "I couldn't call out."

She said she couldn't say whether anything had been taken from her home.

Neighbors, accompanied by police, found Davis lodged in the garbage-can-size bucket. She was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition yesterday.

Kazon Godwin, the 14-year-old son of Davis' friend Michele Ayala, wriggled through the dog entrance and unlocked the house for police after his family grew concerned that the woman had not been heard from.

Davis is frail as a result of a hip replacement and knee operations, neighbors said. She works as a teacher's aide in the local school district.

"I feel pretty good," she said yesterday.

Pemberton Township police officials could not be reached for further comment yesterday.

    Now that's interesting.

Oh great! Now we have random robbers sticking our butts in a recycle bins to look forward to in our old age.

I hope this doesn't catch on as a trend.

Does she have a touch of dementia or something ? Why would she say it was the dog first ? I'm glad she's okay though....

But Mary Davis, 76, offered a different explanation yesterday from her bed at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly.
I wonder is she was being medicated when she came up with the new explanation, lol.
