Shanna Jones-Vogt mistakens husband as an intruder shoots him, shoots self

MCCORDSVILLE, Ind. -- A man told police his wife fatally shot herself after mistaking him for an intruder and shooting him early Saturday morning at a Hamilton County home they were renting.

Hamilton County sheriff's deputies were called to a home in the 9600 block of Soaring Eagle Lane, in the Fox Hollow neighborhood near 96th Street and Olio Road, at about 1:30 a.m.

Police said they found Shanna Jones-Vogt, 28, shot in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband, Charles Vogt III, 44, had been shot in the torso. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police said Vogt told them that his wife was so distraught after shooting him that she turned the .38-caliber handgun on herself.

“From the statements Mr. Vogt made, it appears that his wife may have thought he was someone else coming into the residence, for some reason,” said Hamilton County sheriff’s spokesperson Vicky Dunbar.

Neighbors told 6News' Tanya Spencer that the couple had just gotten married on Valentine's Day and appeared to be very happy.

"They seemed to be wonderful people. She seemed to be a wonderful mother," said neighbor Michelle Forslund. "I believe he was the stepfather, and they seemed to be wonderful with him as well … We weren’t real close with them, but they seemed to be great people.”

The Vogts were renting a home in the upscale neighborhood, but were planning to build a home of their own.

“You just would never, never, never guess that of them. Things seemed to be wonderful from the outside,” Forslund said. “Very scary, and I think it’s shocked us all.”

Police said Jones-Vogt’s 5-year-old son was visiting his father and was not home when the shootings occurred.

“It’s a tragedy all the way around when you’ve got a young woman who lost her life and a 5-year-old who lost his mother,” Dunbar said.

Charles Vogt called 911 after the shootings. While the tape of those calls is usually released, police declined to do so in this case and called the tape evidence in the death investigation.

It doesn't make sense, if he is unlocking the door with a key an intruder is not going to do that. I don't get it why did she think it was an intruder?????????????? May she RIP I'm sorry something doesn't smell right with this stinky story and it so happened to be at the time her 5 yr old was visiting with his father for the weekend. I say SET UP! I could be wrong and I have been before.

I was thinking the same thing. Something doesn't smell right here. We may never know, but instead of killing myself, had I "mistakenly" shot my beloved, I would be on the phone to 911 so fast I wouldn't have time to shoot myself. Hope the truth comes out in this one, keep us posted!

I concur with y'all... Honestly, if you accidently shoot your husband, or anyone in the gut... wouldn't you call 911 to see if they can be saved before offing yourself? Gut wounds usually take a LONG time to kill you

Noooooooo.....reminds me of this case, maybe y'all remember it.

On October 23, 1989, Stuart, manager of Kakas Furs, and his pregnant wife Carol (born Carol DiMaiti, March 26, 1959), a lawyer, got into their car after attending childbirth classes at Brigham and Women's Hospital. According to Stuart's subsequent statement, a black gunman with a raspy voice forced his way into their car at a stoplight, ordered them to drive to Mission Hill, robbed them, then opened fire, shooting Charles in the stomach and Carol in the head. Stuart then drove away to escape, calling 911 on his car phone. A CBS film crew for Rescue 911 happened to be riding along with Boston Emergency Medical Services personnel and was able to capture the scene as police and EMTs assisted Stuart.

Carol Stuart died that night, after her son, Christopher, was delivered two months early by caesarean section. The infant suffered seizures due to oxygen deprivation and died 17 days later after his father authorized discontinuing life support. Boston police searched for suspects matching Stuart's description of the assailant. Police suspected a man named Willie Bennett and on December 28, Stuart picked him out of a lineup. Though investigating officers did ask doctors whether Stuart's wounds could have been self-inflicted, they were told that this was very unlikely given the severity of the injuries.

The case against Bennett abruptly collapsed when Charles Stuart's brother, Matthew, identified Stuart as the killer. Matthew admitted that he had driven to meet Stuart that night to help him commit what he'd been told was to be an insurance fraud; that he had seen that Carol had been shot, and that his brother — who had apparently shot himself to support his false story — was clearly in pain. Matthew took the gun and a bag of valuables that his brother handed him and threw them away; they were recovered in Revere off the Marsh Road, in a creek. Police later learned that Stuart had been interested in (but not actually involved with) an intern at the fur salon and was also having financial difficulties. An article in The Boston Globe alleged that a $480,000 check was issued to Charles Stuart in payment for a life insurance policy on his wife, but this was later found to be false, as no such check was ever found. On January 4, 1990, Stuart jumped from the Tobin Bridge to his death. He left no suicide note.

100% agree! It doesnt add up. Its like all these fuckwits we read about on here who kill their kids and then try to 'commit suicide' with a few pathetic swipes at their wrists with a blunt blade. He just took it up a level to make it more convincing.

If this is the one I'm thinking of, I saw a graphic picture of it at the time either on TV or in a newspaper. It disturbed me enough that I can see it very clear right now. I hadn't thought of that photo in ages.

Investigators say they have no reason to search for a suspect.

"From speaking with the detectives, it doesn't appear that it was an accidental discharge of a weapon of any kind," said Vicky Dunbar, Hamilton Co. Sheriff's Department. "There does not appear to be any forced entry to the residence, there does not appear to be anything of that nature. We do believe everything was contained within the household."

Now, police are trying to figure out who shot who.

"We do have a statement from the husband. We just need to go through and confirm everything to make sure that the evidence matches up with that person's statement," Dunbar said.

Well that was a round about way of saying they aren't buying his story the way I'm reading it.
