MCCORDSVILLE, Ind. -- A man told police his wife fatally shot herself after mistaking him for an intruder and shooting him early Saturday morning at a Hamilton County home they were renting.
Hamilton County sheriff's deputies were called to a home in the 9600 block of Soaring Eagle Lane, in the Fox Hollow neighborhood near 96th Street and Olio Road, at about 1:30 a.m.
Police said they found Shanna Jones-Vogt, 28, shot in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband, Charles Vogt III, 44, had been shot in the torso. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Police said Vogt told them that his wife was so distraught after shooting him that she turned the .38-caliber handgun on herself.
“From the statements Mr. Vogt made, it appears that his wife may have thought he was someone else coming into the residence, for some reason,” said Hamilton County sheriff’s spokesperson Vicky Dunbar.
Neighbors told 6News' Tanya Spencer that the couple had just gotten married on Valentine's Day and appeared to be very happy.
"They seemed to be wonderful people. She seemed to be a wonderful mother," said neighbor Michelle Forslund. "I believe he was the stepfather, and they seemed to be wonderful with him as well … We weren’t real close with them, but they seemed to be great people.”
The Vogts were renting a home in the upscale neighborhood, but were planning to build a home of their own.
“You just would never, never, never guess that of them. Things seemed to be wonderful from the outside,” Forslund said. “Very scary, and I think it’s shocked us all.”
Police said Jones-Vogt’s 5-year-old son was visiting his father and was not home when the shootings occurred.
“It’s a tragedy all the way around when you’ve got a young woman who lost her life and a 5-year-old who lost his mother,” Dunbar said.
Charles Vogt called 911 after the shootings. While the tape of those calls is usually released, police declined to do so in this case and called the tape evidence in the death investigation.
