Michael Powell and 2 others injured when his 11 yr. old son crash the family car

Three people were taken to hospitals during the weekend after an 11-year-old Augusta County boy lost control of his speeding family car.

Just after midnight Saturday, the car driven by the boy skidded across an oncoming lane of traffic on Thoroughfare Road north of Waynesboro and crashed into a concrete culvert, according to Virginia State Police. The northbound car was traveling about 5 miles faster than the speed limit, police said. The boy was wearing a seat belt.

Beside the boy in the front seat was his father, 31-year-old Michael Powell, who was listed in fair condition yesterday at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Also in the front seat was Kelly Scott, 30, who was airlifted to U.Va. with spinal fractures. She, too, was listed in fair condition. Another boy, 7, was treated at Augusta Medical Center; another man suffered minor injuries.

Now what the hell was his 11 yr. son doing driving the family car. I want to know why. I'm glad he was wearing a seat belt but tell me more. He has really injured Kelly Scott with spinal fractures.

I could see way out on a dirt road in the daytime letting your 12-15 year old practice drive for a couple minutes. This was past midnight and not on a country road, wth? The parents had to of been messed up on something. People are so stupid.

I used to sit on my Dad's lap and drive when I a kid in the '80s. Only on backroads though, out in the sticks where I grew up. Never on main roads. It's sort of an old tradition to let the kids take the wheel. The Dad probably remembered driving with his own Dad next to him and the scenario of something happening never crossed his mind. It's weird how we can block out the idea of something wrong happening, even if that something wrong has a very high chance of happening.

For the record, I'm not going to let my own kids drive my car.

You can get a drivers license at 14 here. None of our kids got theirs until 17. We were mean.
