A Springfield man was arrested Sunday for allegedly battering his girlfriend after she threatened to call police because she thought he bit their 4-week-old baby.
Charles F. Jurgens, 23, of the 1300 block of North Franklin Street was taken to the Sangamon County Jail for domestic battery and released after posting bail.
The infant’s 19-year-old mother told police that Jurgens, who is the baby’s father, agreed to stay up and watch the child so she could get some sleep. She went to bed about 1 a.m. and when she got up about 10 a.m. she found the child wearing pajamas, which was unusual, she told police, because the couple usually left the baby in diapers.
The woman went to change the baby’s diaper and pajamas and noticed bite marks on his lower left stomach and on his back. She said no one else was with the baby but Jurgens.
She said she confronted Jurgens about the marks, and he told her he was just playing with the baby and didn’t know he left any marks. She told police the man pinched the baby once on a previous occasion.
When the woman tried to call police, Jurgens allegedly battered her and prevented her from calling.
Police said Jurgens denied biting his son.
