Donald Regis Miller follows a 7-year-old into the restroom

    Donald Regis Miller

A Bethel Park man faces a string of criminal charges after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 7-year-old boy in the bathroom of the Bethel Park Municipal building this weekend, according to a criminal complaint.

Surveillance cameras captured Donald Regis Miller, 18, following the boy into the bathroom and leaving several minutes later, the complaint says. According to police, Mr. Miller pushed the boy into a stall and locked the door. Mr. Miller forcibly covered the boy's mouth with his hand when he tried to scream, knocking out a tooth, the complaint says.

Police said Mr. Miller also threatened the boy with a knife, holding it to his chest when he resisted. He was arraigned on charges including sexual and aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and recklessly endangering another person.

Mr. Miller was held in the Allegheny County Jail after he was arrested Saturday at his home. Police have recommended that Mr. Miller be evaluated by the jail's behavioral clinic.

A new camera system in the Bethel Park Municipal Building helped identify a teenager accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old boy in a bathroom upstairs from the police department, officials said Monday.

"I can't believe that happened right under the police's nose," said Bridget Riley, 16, who learned about the Saturday afternoon attack while visiting the library yesterday, up the hall from the bathroom.

Police said surveillance camera footage shows Donald Regis Miller, 18, of Bethel Park following the boy into the restroom about 4:45 p.m. and leaving several minutes later, according to a criminal complaint. Police said Miller locked the boy in a stall and assaulted him at knifepoint.

Miller was arraigned Sunday and sent to the Allegheny County Jail on $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing March 2 in a courtroom that sits downstairs from where the attack occurred.

Police charged Miller with aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and indecent assault.

Police arrested Miller at his home. He confessed to the attack, according to a police affidavit.

"It would never cross my mind that could happen here," said Fred Krummert, 64, of Bethel Park, who was reading a magazine in the library yesterday. "I guess nothing should shock me."

No one answered the door at Miller's home. Several neighbors said they didn't know him or his family. One neighbor said she saw police at the Miller house before.

An officer identified Miller from surveillance video. Police Chief John Mackey said officers know Miller from two previous incidents.

Miller ran away in September from Bethel Park's Pathfinder School, which serves children and adolescents with disabilities, Mackey said.

Sarah McCluan, spokeswoman for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, which runs the school, said federal and state laws prohibit AIU officials from commenting on special-education students. She said she could not confirm nor deny whether Miller was enrolled at Pathfinder.

Mackey said police responded last year to a domestic disturbance at the Miller residence.

Bethel Park police and municipal officials are considering adding cameras and upgrading the existing cameras to color from black and white. The police chief said the motion-activated cameras are only a few months old. Officials installed them late last year.

"Thank goodness we have the surveillance system we have," Mackey said. "That greatly assisted us on Saturday."

He urged parents to watch children and either accompany them to restrooms or send them in groups.

I think I would still take a 7 yr old into the bathroom with me in public. Call me over protective...but that is so young still to go to the bathroom by himself (in public).
I would make my husband go with my oldest son til he was like 15...hes almost 16 now....LOL

Scary shit out there. I cant even imagine that happening to one of my kids. And I wasnt there to protect them. I would feel guilty for the rest of my life. I would rather embarrass them and bring them with me....being a member here has made me even more protective...if you can believe that!

You are not too over protective TT. A couple of weeks ago, me and my two boys, 5yrs. and 18 months, were at the grocery store. My 5 yr. old needed to go bad, but the ladies room was being cleaned. My baby was having a fit and needed to be fed and my 5 yr. old kept begging me to let him go in the "big boys bathroom"...so, I reluctantly let him go in men's bathroom alone. He was in and out very quickly and seemed happy enough to have gone. He was like wow, mama, first time, I can go by myself. I was asking him how it went and he tells me, "a man said, I'm very pretty"....my heart just about stopped.
I still can't believe I let him do that. My sister said, oh, he was probably just complimenting Nathan, I'm like NO. No grown man, especially a stranger should tell a boys he is pretty....ewww, and in the bathroom. I questioned him more and asked if anything else happened...nothing did, but I swear, that will be the last time he goes in alone until he's 15!

I wasn't ever going to tell a soul and now you know. I suck, I know. I feel like such a terrible mama, letting my little boy go in there alone, after what I read here???? And it really pisses me off that our bathrooms are not safe for children!!!
FUCK, I really, am an idiot for letting that happen.
