Derrick Britt shook his GF's 5-month-old while babysitting (detached retina)

    Derrick Britt, 24

MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) - A Madisonville man accused of hurting his girlfriend's baby has made his first court appearance.

Prosecutors say Derrick Britt, 24, either shook or slammed the five-month-old. He was indicted earlier this week by a grand jury and charged with first degree assault.

Prosecutors say the baby's mother left the baby with Britt while she went shopping in December. She returned home to find the baby unresponsive.

The child was then rushed to a Louisville hospital where the staff discovered a detached retina. Authorities say his injuries are consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The child is now back in the mother's care and Britt is scheduled for another court hearing in April.

Can they fix detached retinas, or does it always cause blindness?
Love withers under constraint; its very essence is liberty. It is compatible neither with obedience, jealousy nor fear. It is there most pure, perfect, and unlimited when its votaries live in confidence, equality and unreserve. - Percy Byshe Shelley

It can be surgically fixed, but all the procedures sound pretty gruesome, 'specially for a baby. (Still better than blindness tho')

Poor baby. I hope he recovers fully and doesnt suffer any long term effects.

    Die, Derrick Britt. Bastard.
