Joshua Murray was booked the Osceola County Jail, and the case was referred to the Department of Children and Families, the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The victim is a student at Boggy Creek Elementary School who uses a wheelchair, the statement said.

The student was taken to a local hospital where doctors confirmed the injuries were substantial because the incident occurred more than 15 hours before, and a red hand print and bruising was still visible on the child's face.
Detectives spoke with the family member who said he was upset with the child and smacked her face but didn’t think the injury was that severe.
