Gildazio Costa, 54, of 26 Willis St., Apt. 2, faces charges of domestic assault and battery, threats, kidnapping and forced confinement after he repeatedly struck his girlfriend Saturday evening, police said.
Police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said an argument over the operating hours of the library began around 11 a.m. between Costa and the girlfriend. The argument continued until 4 p.m. when Costa punched the woman in the head, he said.
When the woman couldn't find her cell phone to call police, she tried to leave, the lieutenant said. Costa then blocked her way and told her she couldn't leave
, Shastany said.
"If she attempted to leave, he'd punch her in the face," Shastany said the victim later told police.
The victim - who told police there was "longterm physical abuse," according to Shastany - said every time she asked to leave, Costa would hit her on her left side or arm.
Around 7 p.m., Costa took a call on his own cell phone, and walked to the bathroom to talk. That's when the victim said she ran after Costa, yelled to the caller to contact police, and fled.
