A caregiver for a Lake Mary assisted-living facility was arrested Monday after police found a confused, elderly patient along a busy road.
Thomas Artley, 31, faces one count of neglect of the elderly without bodily harm, a third-degree felony, after police said he slept while a 78-year-old under his care escaped the Tender Hearts facility on Estates Circle and rode his wheelchair about a third of a mile to Old Lake Mary Road.
A police dispatcher heading to work found the man just before 6 a.m. Feb. 3, sitting beside the road in a sweater, shorts and a hospital shirt, Detective John Kelly said.
The dispatcher asked who the man was and where he was going, and the man replied he didn't know where he lived, was 29 and heading to elementary school, Kelly said. An officer found Artley sleeping in the house where the assisted-living facility is located. He was the lone caregiver.
Artley was being held in Seminole County jail on $1,000 bail.
