Cassandra Weronick 3, found in snow, died from hypothermia

MAMAKATING, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say an autopsy confirmed that a 3-year-old girl found dead in the snow near her upstate New York home died from hypothermia.

State police investigators say there was no foul play in the death of Cassandra Weronick, who was found Wednesday morning in a snow bank less than a mile from her parents' rural home in the Sullivan County town of Mamakating, just south of the Catskills about 70 miles northwest of New York City.

Authorities say the toddler was wearing only a diaper and a T-shirt when she wandered away from the house while her parents slept. A neighbor driving to work found the girl's body.

The girl's parents, who have two other older children, haven't been charged in connection with her death.

Excuse me while I go puke. No foul play!? Why the hell was a 3 year child wandering around outside with just a shirt and a diaper on? Sounds like neglect to me.

When my son was three, he was getting far to curious and successful in opening the entry door. We installed dead-bolts on every door up high to prevent him from getting out. Of course he never let us sleep for long to escape, but it sure gave us that extra security. He's five now and still can't open those bolts. Something this inexpensive and easy to install could have kept this terrible tragedy from happening.
