26 Women Say Dr. Peter Chi Molested Them

At least 26 women are now saying that a Tracy plastic surgeon sexually abused them during surgery or exams, police said today.

The number has tripled since earlier this week with 18 more victims who came forward alleging sexual assault by 46-year-old Peter Chi, who owns Beauty Renewed. A criminal complaint alleges that Chi raped or otherwise sexually abused eight women. He faces 11 felony counts of sexual abuse, including three counts of rape by a foreign object.

A judge today ordered the doctor to stay away from his medical office and see no more patients at least until his arraignment next week. Chi also surrendered his passport in court and is free after posting $100,000 bail.

Chi will likely spend time in state prison and register for life as a sex offender, police said.

He showed up to court three minutes before his scheduled hearing with his wife and bondsman, his head held high, his demeanor upbeat in front of a crush of cameras and the presence of at least two victims and their family.

Since investigators on Wednesday filed the first complaint charging the doctor with having molested eight women since late 2007, a slew of new victims have contacted police.

Police said that in some cases, nurses watched Chi molest his patients, telling them it was part of the procedure, and at other times no one but the patient and doctor were in the room.

After returning from court today, Tracy police Detective Nate Cogburn got to work interviewing the several new victims who came forward since news broke of the allegations against Chi. Investigators said they expect to file an updated complaint either Friday or early next week.

Chi nearly got his license revoked last year when he found a cancerous cyst on the neck of a 59-year-old man at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital but failed to tell him about it, according to the California Medical Board. It took an exam by another doctor for the patient to find out he had cancer.

The petition alleged malpractice and charged Chi with “gross negligence” because he failed to share the results with the patient.

Chi also has three malpractice settlements on his record from recent years.

The number of women accusing a Tracy plastic surgeon of sexually assaulting them has grown to 64 — one of them a 16-year-old.

Peter Chi, 46, of Livermore, will appear in court for further arraignment on Tuesday.

The ear, nose and throat doctor performed more than 5,000 surgeries during his 13-year medical career. Tracy police arrested him in February on charges that he raped eight women. That number quickly tripled.

But women kept calling in with allegations of rape, police said today. Investigators added dozens more charges.

In a criminal complaint filed today, police allege that 64 women ranging in age from 16 to 63 had come forward with accusations of rape.

Think about that... ages 16 to 63. This guy was obviously pretty indiscriminate about who he abused. Funny thing is, as a plastic surgeon, he was probably rich as fuck, and could have had any woman he wanted if he went about it like normal people do (i.e. not raping them).

Good point, I didn't even think of that. In fact, with that kind of money, he could have hired some weird-ass specialist hooker that would let him do freaky insertions and all kinds of fetishy stuff.

Peter Chi, 48, will be sentenced to six years in state prison and have to register for life as a sex offender under the terms of a negotiated plea deal with prosecutors. He will spend at least three years in prison before he is eligible for release on parole.

In court, he admitted to 36 counts of felony sexual battery by fraud, one for each of the women who accused him of inappropriately touching her. The deal preempts a trial, previously set to begin in January.

Prosecutors indicted Chi on 67 counts for inappropriately touching 36 women. Aside from the teenager, his victims ranged in age from 21 to 62.

The earliest molestation is believed to have occurred in 2004.

One victim, who spoke to The Record on condition of anonymity last year, said she stirred awake from a 2007 tummy tuck at his Tracy office and felt Chi touching her genitals.

She asked what he was doing, and Chi told her it was part of the procedure before putting her back to sleep, she said.

At least 37 women filed civil lawsuits against Chi, which settled in May for a total of $1.8 million.

Chi remains out of jail until his sentencing by Judge Villapudua set for April 4. She said that at that time he will be taken into custody and turned over to state prison officials to begin serving his sentence.

Prosecutors said they expect many of Chi's victims to attend the sentencing, and some may wish to address the court to explain the impact Chi's crimes have had on their lives.
