Obamas Brother(half) arrested. DOPE!

NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) -- George Obama, the half-brother of U.S. President Barack Obama, has been arrested by Kenyan police on a charge of possession of marijuana, police said Saturday.

It looks a lot like him.

Inspector Augustine Mutembei, the officer in charge, said Obama was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis, known in Kenya as Bhang, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Mutembei said.

He is being held at Huruma police post in the capital of Nairobi.

Speaking from behind bars, Obama denied the allegations.

"They took me from my home," he said, "I don't know why they are charging me."

George Obama and the president barely know each other, though they have met. George Obama was one of the president's few close relatives who did not go to the inauguration in Washington last week.

In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," Barack Obama describes meeting George as a "painful affair." Barack Obama's trip to Kenya meant meeting family he had never known.

McKenzie tracked down George Obama in August and found him at a small house in Huruma, a Nairobi slum, where he lives with his mother's extended family. His birth certificate shows that he is Barack Obama's half-brother.

The two men share a Kenyan father. In the memoir, Barack Obama struggles to reconcile with his father after he left him and his mother when he was just a child.

Barack Obama Sr. died in a car accident when George was just 6 months old. Like his half-brother, George hardly knew his father.

George was his father's last child and had not been aware of his famous half-brother growing up.

Unlike his grandmother in Kogela, in western Kenya, George Obama had received little attention from the media until reports about him surfaced in August.

The reports sprung from an Italian Vanity Fair article saying George Obama lived in a shack and was "earning less than a dollar a day." Those reports left George Obama angry.

"I was brought up well. I live well even now," he said. "The magazines, they have exaggerated everything.

"I think I kind of like it here. There are some challenges, but maybe it is just like where you come from, there are the same challenges," Obama said.

Obama, who is in his mid-20s, said at the time that he was learning to become a mechanic and was active in youth groups in Huruma. He said he tried to help the community as much as he can.

I dunno about you Malq, but if I had shady ass relatives hiding in the woodwork, and they needed help, and I didn't really know them, I'm not sure I would be so inclined to start forking out the dollars. Just sayin'. LOL But I'm sure they smoked up, I mean come on, they had to bond somehow!

Obama's got as many siblings from his biofather as I do, at least. I have four brothers and sisters on that side of the family, one of which I've met. two older and two younger, all of which are pretty damned triflin', from what I've heard... I wouldn't be inclined to help them out, either.

Nor would I expect people to color their opinions of me by looking to people i've never met who i happen to share DNA with.

Amen to that! And to Lady's whole post. My dad was married, hell at least 8 times, but I think 9. (He didn't settle down until he met my stepmom Janice, they were married 20 years when he died) and he also cheated on all his wives except Janice, she was his soul mate. So I have 18 brothers and sisters.

My brother Nick was from his girlfriend Fran, while he was married to my mom (his first wife). My mom and Fran were pregnant at the same time. My mom had her 5th girl and Fran gave my dad a son! Most of my siblings i'm close to and love to pieces and are wonderful people, but there are two that I don't want to claim DNA with! And one i'll never meet, a brother named Zach who was adopted out and doesn't want to know us.

But if people labeled me because of two of my siblings that i barely know, i'd be in trouble!! And I probably wouldn't fork dollars over to them as I know they'd drink it and inject it, and it would be a waste. I might buy groceries for them if they asked, but i'd buy the food and not hand over money.

So I think everyone should lay off Oboma, it's not his fault. And the brother should listen and pull himself up!

By the by, my mom was married 3 times and that helped add to the sibling list!

Regardless, becoming president of the United States obviously has nothing to do with merit. It is all about political maneuvering and presentation. Ever person in public office is subjected top the scrutiny of the shit diggers. Is it fair and just? Probably not, but if you want to be president prepare to have every stone unturned. And it may show some genetic predisposition. At least in the publics eyes it may be a factor that if your sibling gets high, most likely you do too???

News of the World, a British tabloid, has posted a picture Saturday evening which they claim is 14-time Olympic Gold medalist Michael Phelps taking a bong hit at a college in South Carolina.

Phelps was allegedly photographed smoking marijuana in November of 2008 at a college party which he showed up unannounced to, according to News of the World.

Phelps was arrested for DWI back in Maryland back in 2004. He was only 19 at the time.

News of the World said that Phelps' people attempted to stop them from running the picture. His reps have not commented.

I have 16 siblings in all shades of full, half, adopted, and step. I can't imagine NOT knowing them and embracing them all. But I have a totally weird family.

If the Big O and the Little Doper aren't close, I see no reason that this is even news. Obviously a dollar goes a lot further there than here.

Yes Malq, every politician and especially the president opens himself for scrutiny from everyone. But does that mean he should have given this half brother money? Then people would have called it welfare and enabling his drug habit.

I don't believe the families are open for discussion as they are not the ones who decided to run for office.

Not to get OT, but President Obama has already come out and discussed his prior history with trying drugs, both in interviews and in his books. So he won't have to defend himself now against it.

And further, who the F cares - Legalize pot, tax the shit out of it...that's the way to save the economy

I'm the first one to legalize weed! But I think it adds to Obamas portfolio no matter how you look at it. Your whole family should be looked at. To not do so is burying your head in the sand. I never said he should donate money to his brother. It was a issue though before the election. Enough to grab headlines.

when they asked obama if he inhaled, he said soemthing like - well, that was the whole point, really. i like a pragmatic, honest president.

and really, george obama is a pussycat compared to billy carter. i dont think anyone can say that jimmy carter is an alcoholic bc billy is. look at the unibomber and his brother - very dif.

I think that's a good point, I agree that the entire family should be looked at (one of the reasons I did a keg stand of Obama koolaid after Palin was nominated in august) BUT I have a question for you - basically, do you feel that "family" in a situation like this should be treated the same way as a more typical "family" situation - ie, instead of a 1/2 brother around the world who he met once, a 1/2 brother that he grew up with, lives around the corner, does holidays etc.
For me personally, if the family member had a close relationship w/the person in question, that would matter more. In your earlier post you mention genetic predisposition, so that just made me think whether the relationship level would be a relevant factor for you. (edit) Just reaad Petrina's post and I agree with that too. I guess my position is I like to take everything I can into consideration, and make an educated decision from that

Ps - my WTF - bad choice of words - didn't mean we shouldn't talk about this/debate/discuss - I love doing that

Couldn't this be an argument for nature vs nurture? If they were exposed to substance abuse in the formative years of their life, then who's to say that their addictions are genetically based?
Because Barrack and George grew up, in worlds nothing alike, would they both be inclined to have addiction problems, just because they share the same sperm donor?

Hey now - lets be accurate. There is NO evidence G.O. is a drug dealer. The charge was possession, and it was apparently 1 joint. Hell, most of my friends keep more that on hand in order to be a good host when you visit. ha ha. Thank you for the discourse too.

George Obama was arrested in Kenya on suspicion of marijuana possession, according to police.

He was released on Saturday hours later, police added.

Obama was arrested in a Nairobi slum, and he was picked up with people who possessed marijuana, said police spokesman Eric Kiraithe.

"Being found with people who are in possession of cannabis is a petty offense," Kiraithe said.

Earlier, police had told CNN that Obama had been arrested for possessing cannabis and resisting arrest, which can carry a sentence of up to a year in jail or hefty fines.

"Police in Kenya do not look at criminals in light of associations with relatives," Kiraithe said.
