LORANGER, La. – A woman wanted for abandoning her child at the scene of a fire was arrested by Tangipahoa police after receiving an anonymous tip, Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said.

Police had been looking for Latoya Kelly since March 3, 2008, when police completed an investigation into a Jan. 13, trailer fire, Panepinto said.

After responding to a Loranger trailer fire, investigators determined that Latoya Kelly and Crystal Burise had left their children unattended, Panepinto said. Fire investigators determined the fire began in a bedroom where children were playing after a 3-year-old child placed some clothing on a hot plate they were using for heat, police said.

On March 3, 2008, police issued warrants for four counts of child desertion for Kelly and Burise, police said. Three months later, Burise turned herself in to Tangipahoa Sherriff’s Office deputies, police said, while Kelly continued to evade police.

An anonymous tip led police to a home in Ponchatoula, where they found Kelly, police said. Tangipahoa Sheriff’s deputies said she was also wanted by Hammond, Livingston, and East Baton Rouge police on numerous other charges.
