Meredith Stilwell likes to smother her sick daughter.

While 11-month-old Alexa lay recovering in a hospital for the past two weeks, police came forward and arrested her mother on 2 charges - attempted first-degree murder and felony child abuse . She is being held without bond.

Alexa, who was diagnosed with cerebral atrophy which affects her brain as well as her heart and lung function began suffering from seizures after she had surgery. Her mother, Meredith Stilwell, 21, placed a phone call to police at the beginning of the month saying " She's blue. I'm giving her oxygen right now." She was admitted and has remained at Levine Children’s Hospital at CMC since receiving that call more than 2 weeks ago due to her trouble breathing, vomiting, and the seizures.

Police were called on Tuesday by doctors who have claimed that little Alexa was being abused while in the hospital. Investigators have not released what evidence they have regarding the abuse and have not named a motive, but they are confident with their findings that Meredith Stilwell was smothering the child on more than one occasion, but each time stopping to keep the child alive.

Naturally, her husband and their family is standing behind her and supporting her insisting that Alexa has been in and out of the hospital her whole 11 months of life and his wife has been with her through many of those hospitalizations. "My wife has made it her main objective and focus to make sure the health of our daughter was No. 1,” he said.

Alexa remains in the hospital, but they have not disclosed her condition at this time.

I'm not the least bit suprised to read this. Mommy probably did a pretty good job of keeping her there.

I hope you recover little one, now that mom isn't tending to your bedside

I'm hoping they had their suspicions and they caught her on video tape. Please, please, please. I wouldn't ever want to see that baby returned if its true.

Until they release whatever information they have, we won't know if it's Munchausen's Syndrome (sp?)...... but I'd hate to jump the gun on this one.

A lady I know of had her children taken away from her on suspicions of Munchausen's, and she kept insisting it was NOT, and she wouldn't hurt her child. Then after the child was taken from her custody, they realized the child kept getting worse and worse IN the hospital, and since mom was nowhere near the child they realized it wasn't the case at all.

I just hope this mom isn't involved with hurting her own child, because the thought of that just makes me want to hurl.

I want to know more about the baby. "Cerebral atrophy"? Are we talking about a condition that has no possible child abuse connotations, or is the "cerebral atrophy" in question likely caused by parental action/inaction?

I understand that we have some indication of the child's mother attempting to suffocate her at the hospital. However, I'd like to know what went before: was the mother informed that her child would never be normal? Or has the mother's actions prior to this made it certain (or likely) that the child will never be normal?

I am not suggesting that killing babies is okay. However, I want to hold open for discussion the notion that infants with some medical conditions may not be best served by "heroic" efforts to continue their lives.

I shocked myself with this one

I have to agree in some aspects with dearest Lizard here. I never thought about it, because when I think of a baby, I think of a perfect little human being that has so much potential and so many things to do in life. But what do you do with babies who don't have a chance at having a "normal" quality of life? How do we define a normal quality of life? Especially for an infant? I think we definitely take quality of life into consideration with our elderly society when making the decision whether to have heroic life saving efforts should their situations decline, but one doesn't think of that when talking about an infant. It's definitely a question to ponder.

I'm not sure we understand all the facts in this case. My understanding is that from birth this poor child has been in ill health, and that symptoms/conditions of her medical situation were breathing/development related. I would assume that the hospital had pretty substantial evidence to make such an accusation against a parent. But then again, people can be wrong. I'm going to wait for more information before I lambaste the bitch.

cerebral atrophy is when the brain is losing brain cell function, and it can be caused by many different things. One of those is trauma. My vote is that mom is a psycho who after she had baby lost all the attention she was getting while pregnant, so she decides to start smothering baby for periods at a time to make it appear to be sick to call 911 get an ambulance, go to hospital.. get attention. After several incidents where this happened, they called the "problem" cerebral atrophy.. Dad said "she was in the hospital by her side all of the babies life" Well, here's your sign ! She was there with her so she could make sure she kept the baby sick and kept it passing out and having problems. The staff must have been on to her after all these months and finally caught her in the act thank God!

I know for a fact that the Levine Children’s Hospital at CMC is covered with cameras. Wonder if they got her on film? I got someone checking for me.

Just got confirmation that she was caught red-handed and the staff had been suspecting something was up. Will get more info when I get it.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 21-year-old mother is in jail, accused of trying to suffocate her 11-month-old daughter.

Police say the incident happened after Meredith Stilwell's daughter, Alexa, was taken to Levine Children's Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center for tests.

The child was there for about two weeks and on Jan. 27, hospital staff reported that Stilwell allegedly tried to suffocate the infant at the hospital.

The child remains hospitalized at CMC. According to the website CaringBridge.org, which is sponsored by Levine Children's Hospital, Alexa has cerebral atrophy, which affects her brain growth.

Stilwell, of Catawba County, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony child abuse. She is being held without bond.

    What a beautiful little girl.

Alexa has a CaringBridge website that was filled in by her mother. It has some interesting information about the health of little Alexa. And of course, they would appreciate any donations, as well as thoughts and prayers.

Alexa was born 9 weeks early, at 3 lb even. When she was born she was diagnosed with a bleed in her brain, two holes in her heart, undeveloped retinas, and developed sepsis. She was in the hospital for 2 months until she was able to come home. Not 5 days after Alexa had come home, she stopped breathing on us at home, and required CPR, and 911 to be called. It was at this hospital admission that she was diagnosed with one of the most severe cases of reflux that they had ever seen in a baby. We were sent home on monitors, and medications like you couldn’t believe. Yet with everything they were doing, it didn’t seem to help my baby girl feel better, continue to breath on her own, or developed as expected. Because of the severity of her episodes where she would stop breathing, it was determined that surgery was needed to correct the problem; so in late September she had surgery and a feeding tube placed. During this hospital admission she stopped breathing after the surgery which was supposed to correct these type of episodes. They did an MRI to determine any other possibilities and they discovered that she had Cerebral Atrophy, which means that her brain and brainstem have not developed, and the chances of it developing are very slim. We are looking at a future anywhere between her being on a ventalator, to her having severe learning disabilities.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Conover woman is in jail in Charlotte accused of trying to murder her baby girl inside the Levine Children's Hospital.

Meredith Stilwell, 21, is accused of trying to smother 11-month-old Alexa. Stilwell is charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, employees at the hospital called police after determining that baby Alexa had been abused.

Scott Stilwell, who is Meredith's husband and Alexa's father, says Alexa has been in the hosptial six months out of the 11 she's been alive. She suffers from a brain development condition.

Scott Stillwell says Alexa had been in the hospital again for two weeks prior to the alleged attempted murder.

He thinks the pressure had gotten to his wife and that she had some kind of mental breakdown. He doesn't believe his wife wanted their baby to die.

"In my mind, I don't see that she would ever want to kill our daughter," said Scott. "I think, hopefully, we can get [Meredith] the help that she needs."

Cute too. Too bad she is a crazy person that smothers her kids for attention. Oh look, she lists them as if she is a proud parent! How nice.

The last thing i could find on her said she was in a hospital and that Scott Stilwell was divorcing her and moving on. That was in March 2009. I hope he keeps the kids away from her crazy ass.

If you click the Show Other Pages under her likes, I get the feeling she is still in NC but she doesn't list a city or state. She has a court date on 05/07/2010 for a felony count of Intentional Child Abuse - Serious Physical Injury and a felony count of Attempted First Degree Murder, but all I found was a calendar, so I do not know which phase it is at.

ETA: Additionally, I located her release from Mecklenburg County Jail on 07/02/2009. That bond (for charge of attempted 1st deg murder) was set at $50,000 (10%) on 02/25/2009 and pending release onto Electronic Monitoring Program along with an unsecured bond of $100000 (for charge of felony child abuse) on 01/29/2009 (arrest date) also pending release onto the Electronic Monitoring Program. If I read the information correctly, bond was made 07/01/2009 and she was released the next day.
My info is coming from http://mcsowebsvr.co.mecklenburg.nc....ate_search.asp but you need to enter at least her last name as I cannot link direct to the inmate information pages.

Mother pleads guilty to abuse; attempted murder dismissed
CHARLOTTE -- A Catawba County woman accused of trying to suffocate her infant daughter pleaded guilty Friday to child abuse charges but attempted murder charges were dismissed.

Attorneys claim Meredith Stilwell suffered from Munchausen’s Syndrome by proxy, a condition where a person, usually a caregiver, hurts someone else rather than themselves to gain attention.

In additon to the accusations of suffocation, police say she drugged the baby with Ambien and Bendryl and told doctors the baby couldn’t swallow, leading to unnecessary surgey.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center when doctors determined her 11-month-old daughter was being abused.

“It took me by surprise,” the baby’s father, Scott Stilwell, said. Thankfully for the doctors…they intervened and saw signs we didn’t that saved her life.”

Scott Stilwell will testify, saying he's fighting for his daughter.

I am very disappointed. There is evidence of her smothering her baby girl MULTIPLE times while in hospital (how many times did she pull this at home???) and they drop the attempted murder charge??? It is my opinion she created the events that caused Alexa the need to go back to the hospital after being home 5 days. Fucking bitch. I admit I wanted to see her properly pay, maybe mine are not the best of reasons why but are valid ones because my step-boy was abused by his bio-mom in 1994 under the same "diagnosis" ("failure to thrive" made by U.S. Army physicians overseas, he was placed on 24 hour watch for over a week a guard at the door, she was not allowed visitation, he immediately began to gain weight, the fucking bitch was starving him among other things) and she got away with it thanks to the U.S. Army. Once back in the U.S. she proceeded to attempt to fool relatives (her own damn blood family who refuse to have anything to do with her to this day) into thinking he had leukemia, shaved his head and drew on it with a Sharpie marker telling everyone that the doctors had done it to prepare him for surgery (yes, she thought brain surgery was the cure for leukemia, I forgot to mention she is as stupid as all get out) and led him to believe she was the marrow donor who saved his life. At one point later in her life, she shaved her own head telling people she had cancer. God I hate that bitch and wanted to see a like one pay!!!!

A judge sentenced Meredith Stilwell, who pleaded guilty to trying to smother her young daughter in January 2009, to 52 to 72 months in prison Monday.
    [...]
Stilwell told doctors the episodes in which Alexa stopped breathing continued, Van Voorhis said, prompting them to do surgery on the child’s stomach.Van Voorhis said they eventually realized an episode had never happened when a doctor or nurse was present and decided to place cameras in the child’s hospital room.“They were never in the room when it started,” Van Voorhis said. “They would always find Alexa blue, with her mom there performing CPR.”Van Voorhis described the video footage to the courtroom."I saw her fingers pinch Alexa's nose and put her hand over her face,” Van Voorhis said. “Alexa was kicking and struggling, trying to get air.”“Mrs. Stilwell would then put [Alexa] back in bed, wrap her up, then sit in a chair like nothing happened,” the doctor added. “[The video was] the most disturbing thing I've ever seen,” Van Voorhis said. “Mrs. Stilwell would be kissing and comforting Alexa like she was the best mother in the world.”
    [...]
Scott Stilwell said he wants to ensure that Alexa and the couple’s other child, a 4-year-old boy, never see their mother again.“It's comforting to know we've got 5 to 6 -- well 4 to 6 years without having to worry about anything,” he said.
    [...]
I hope Scott immediately begins removing her parental rights to guarantee she never has contact with these children ever again. Kissing and comforting Alexa like she was the best mother in the world... I hope someone tattoos that across her big forehead so I know who my target is when she gets out.

Not only does baby Alexa endure episodes of being smothered she is forced under the knife by none other than momma dearest.

My son had to undergo surgery at 5 mo. and it was terrifying, felt I held my breath through the entire thing. No, but this vile bitch gets her jollies by bringing death oh so close to her very own baby girl more times than we will ever know. I hope her life is riddle with misery, lonely and forgotten. She should never be able to conceive life again, that's my hope too.

I'm assuming baby Alexa is safe now in loving arms, as this selfish thing's fb says Alexa is now 2 yo. Be happy sweet Alexa, you have a strong spirit, determined to live even having been given so many reasons to lose life, you remain today very much alive.
