http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs...107/901230362/Joseph Pettis told a judge Thursday that he shouldn't be punished severely because he was nice to the 18-year-old woman when he raped her five years ago.
"It was not excessively brutal, overly monstrous," Pettis said Thursday. "I haven't taken anyone's life."
That view did not sit well with Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Norbert Nadel. He sentenced Pettis, now 36, to the maximum prison term possible - 40 years.
A jury decided last month that Pettis broke into the woman's Central Parkway home in the early morning hours of Aug. 7, 2003, covered her head with a T-shirt and secured it by wrapping a belt around her neck and then raped her three times.
Police were unable to make any progress in the case for five years - until Pettis went to prison for the fourth time and authorities took his DNA.
When they entered Pettis' DNA into a database, it came back as a positive on the five-year-old case.
"Unfortunately, I was found guilty," Pettis said before being interrupted by Nadel.
"You were found guilty because you are guilty," the judge shot back.
