OVIEDO -- An autopsy has determined that 2-year-old Anthony Cabral had suffered blunt force trauma and now his mother's boyfriend, Jason Lenz, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
"Unfortunately, this boy died of blunt force trauma to the head. What we now know, because of the nature of that injury it wasn't something that was a protracted injury, i.e., it didn't happen long ago. Apparently this child died very quickly after this injury," said Lt. James Clark, of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.
The Seminole County medical examiner performed an autopsy Monday on the boy, who found dead in his home Sunday.
Cabral never woke up Sunday at his usual time, according to the boy's mother.
Tracey Goldrine said she left her son at home, on the 900 block of Kerwood Circle, with Lenz Saturday night while she was at work.
When she went into his room Sunday to wake him up, Goldrine said she found Anthony unresponsive. That was when she called 911.
Paramedics pronounced Anthony dead on the scene.
A sheriff's spokesman said the child did not have a medical history that would have caused a sudden death, and added there were a lot of unanswered questions.
Goldrine said the toddler had been complaining of headaches.
"He was good to him, nothing out of the ordinary," Goldrine said of her son's relationship with her boyfriend. "They were close. My son calls him 'Dad.' They're fine. They were fine."
The toddler would have turned 3 on Feb. 25.
Clark said Lenz's story just didn't add up.
"In the interview process, he has cooperated. He offered his side of the story. Does it match what we've seen? No. Does it mean part of it didn't play out like that? I don't know," Clark said.OVIEDO -- An autopsy has determined that 2-year-old Anthony Cabral had suffered blunt force trauma and now his mother's boyfriend, Jason Lenz, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
