A Deschutes County judge boosted a Plainview-area sex abuse suspect from nearly $3 million to $5 million Friday afternoon at his arraignment on 40 sex abuse counts involving a 10-year-old child.
Circuit Judge Ed Perkins set the higher bail amount for Delaus James Hadley, 24, who was arrested around 1 a.m. at his home.
Prosecutors told Perkins the incidents date back to last September. The judge set another court hearing for Jan. 30 and ordered Hadley to have no contact with the victim, other minors or computers.
Hadley's arrest at a home on Cascade Estates Drive came about 10 hours after the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office received a report, around 3 p.m. Thursday, of child abuse through a "mandatory reporter" - meaning a doctor, teacher or other professional required to report cases of abuse or suspected abuse, said sheriffs Lt. Michael Espinoza.
The initial report indicated Hadley allegedly abused a minor, now 10, "over an undetermined period of time," Espinoza said in a news release. The gender of the alleged victim was withheld as part of an effort to not identify the child, and also won't release the child's relationship with the suspect.
That launched "an extensive investigation," Espinoza said, including a raid on Hadley's home.
At first, Hadley was charged with 21 abuse counts. As the investigation continued Thursday evening, evidence from the home led to additional charges, now totaling 20 counts of first-degree sodomy, 19 counts of first-degree sex abuse and one count of furnishing sexually explicit materials to a minor, Espinoza said.
Hadley was taken into custody around 1 a.m. and was lodged at the Deschutes County Jail on bail of $2,902,500, the lieutenant said. He was due for arraignment Friday afternoon in circuit court.
