Three week old Olivia Rosek killed by family dog.

3 week old twins laying on mom's bed. Family dog grabs one girl by the head and carries her down the hall. Mom calls 911, but baby dies. Comments to the story shut off.

Was the dog 'mothering' the baby?

    So sad. Story at http://daily-journal.com/archives/dj....php?id=434176

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A newborn girl was mauled to death Monday night in her Bourbonnais home by her family’s 4-year-old Siberian husky.

The incident took place at about 5:45 p.m. in a home in the 1600 block of Sunridge Drive, and it happened as the baby girl was lying on her mother’s bed. The 32-year-old mother was in the kitchen preparing supper, Bourbonnais Police Chief Joe Beard said.

The baby girl was a twin, and was born Dec. 26, 2008. Her sibling was also on the bed, Beard said. Most of the injuries appeared to have been inflicted on the child’s head.

The dog walked into the hallway with the baby in its mouth, Beard said. The mother saw it and called 911. Within moments, the child was transported by ambulance to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee and then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. Yet, the baby was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m., Beard said.

The dog is in the custody of Kankakee County Animal Control.

Police and firefighters received "a very distraught" 911 call from the girls' mother about 5:45 p.m. and were dispatched to the family's home in the 1600 block of Sun Ridge Drive, Beard said.

They found Olivia, who was still breathing, with puncture wounds to her head as well as crushing injuries from the dog's jaws, he said.

The girl's twin sister was unharmed, Beard said. Police are not viewing Olivia's death as a neglect case, he said.

"There was nothing in the circumstances that we saw other than a tragic event with this dog," he said, adding that the incident is still under review.

It doesn't sound like the dog was trying to "mother" the baby. Dogs usually don't pick up their young by the head. They adapt to mother other creatures. I assume they have a basic instinct (or something) that tells them to be gentle.

It's gross but It sounds like it was using her for a chew toy.

Her poor little neck was possibly snapped also if the dog had her in his mouth and was jiggling.
Oh the poor family. I guess we never know what 'the family dog' is capable of until its too late.
    RIP sweet darling.

And that's why I would refuse to have a dog around my baby. I don't care how gentle they seem. They are animals and you have to do everything to protect your baby.

Poor sweet baby, rest with God now. This is so sad...............

3-week-old baby mauled by family dog

BOURBONNAIS -- A 3-week-old child is dead after being mauled by the family dog in the north-central Illinois community of Bourbonnais.

Bourbonnais police say the child died late Monday in Chicago after being transported from a Kankakee hospital. The family's names have not been released.

The child's mother called 911 about 5:45 p.m. Monday to report that the family dog, a Siberian Husky, had pulled the infant off of a bed in the master bedroom and dragged the child into a hallway. The child suffered multiple bite injuries to the head.

Police said Tuesday that the dog has been removed from the home without incident and is impounded at Kankakee County animal control.

This is so fucking sad. The image of a newborn baby being dragged by the head just makes me sick....so many dog attacks around babies. When will people learn? just use common sense, do NOT leave a baby unattended with an animal...they are just that, an animal!!

I would never forgive myself, ever...

    Sweet baby Olivia...kisses little one.

I agree 100% Peeper, this poor baby girl didn't have to die, it's just so awful. I would have had a freak'n heart-attack finding my baby like that!

I have two dogs, they don't live with me at the moment (damn landlords) but I never have, and won't as long as she's a baby, leave her unattended with my dogs. Either she is in her crib or packnplay, or they are outside, or in my bedroom. Yes, they do get to interact, and play together, but I am hovering over, and watching like a hawk, I don't think they would intentionally hurt her, but they even the small one has twenty pounds on her, intentional or not, she could get hurt. It's just better to be on the safe side when it comes to babies and dogs, and don't leave them alone together.

    Poor little one, RIP

This happened about three houses down from my father. He said they are a wonderful family. The whole town grieves for them.

    This is so sad.

Like the other posts say you should NEVER leave babies and animals together without close supervision. This poor baby was only 3 weeks old- the dog was probably clueless. I feel badly for the family. Of course I value human life but I also feel for the dog too because its being punished for being an animal. Its lost his family too. And hopefully its not like the one in the other thread that abuses its boarders.

    How Tragic!

This just breaks my heart. I feel so bad for that mother! To lose a child is horrendous enough, but to lose her in such a tragic way is unthinkable! Really horrible! :(

    RIP lil' baby girl.

Boudreau speculated it was possible the dog thought the baby was an animal or a toy. It's also possible the baby was crying and the dog was attempting to take her to the mother, she said.

while police have an option to consider neglect or child endangerment charges against a parent when a child is killed, Beard said, in this case it's not likely.

Why is it so hard to crate your dog when you are not directly supervising it? Or maybe even throw them out back, or lock them in another room... Or the garage perhaps?

It just doesn't make sense to me. Protect your children and protect your animals. Keep them separate. I have a 4 year old that is never left alone with the dogs. 4 years old, not 4 weeks old...
