A Far-Eastside Indianapolis man faces preliminary battery charges after a 10-month-old girl left in his care was critically injured this week.
Avonte M. Yarbrough, 21, was arrested Tuesday after police investigated the girl's injuries, which included bleeding on the brain, retinal hemorrhaging, bruises and possible broken ribs. An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report said the injuries appeared to be a case of shaken baby syndrome.
According to the report, Ari Joseph's injuries may have been suffered Sunday night when she was left with Yarbrough by her mother, who was described as Yarbrough's fiancee.
Yarbrough told police he laid Ari down about 7:30 p.m. and left the room, according to a police report. He said he returned to check on Ari and noticed she was having trouble breathing.
Yarbrough told police he picked the child up, patted her back and walked with her for a while before he called 911, according to the report.
Rescuers took Ari to Community Hospital North, where she was reported in critical condition. When the baby stopped breathing and suffered a seizure, she was sent to St. Vincent Hospital.
Staff at St. Vincent Hospital then reported the child's condition to police.
Attempts to reach the child's mother, Jaleesa J. Joseph, 19, and her family members, also in Gary, were not successful.
Yarbrough is being held without bond.

I pray this poor baby heals and goes to whomever will take proper loving care of her. If mom is in any way responsible, I hope she faces the music soon, too. She has a myspace, but it is private http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=84212299Jaleesa, I hope you and that idiot fiance of yours burn for this. I knew you were no good when I met you and I really knew it when you took that baby away from Chucky and moved to another city just to spite him. What kind of mother is jealous of her own baby anyhow? If she recovers (and I pray everyday that she will,) we will do everything we can to help Chucky get SOLE CUSTODY of her because you don't deserve that beautiful baby. He better not show his face in Gary either. If this wasn't monitored, I would say a heck of a lot more. And to anyone who tries to defend her, you don't know the kind of crap she pulled with the baby's father. Chunky, you are also in our prayers and we will be here for you when you get back.
