JANESVILLE, Wis. -- Police said a Janesville mother and her boyfriend were arrested Friday on abuse charges after EMTs found the mother's 3-year-old daughter bruised and unconscious.
Police said Stephanie A. Witt, 21, pushed the toddler, causing her to fall and hit her head. Witt was arrested on a charge of recklessly causing great bodily harm to a child
Police said Norbert C. Cantu, 28, was arrested on a charge of physical abuse to a child.
Investigators said the incident happened at the home earlier in the day. Police said the child complained of having a headache, and later fell unconscious in the car on the way to a grocery store.
"The injury that occurred internally obviously began to affect the child to the point the child had gone unconscious. That's the time that medical personnel were called and when she was taken to the hospital. Further examination showed that there was a hemorrhage in the brain," said Lt. Tim Heirs, of the Janesville Police Department.
The child was transported to a Madison hospital, where police said she is recovering. Witt and Cantu are scheduled to appear in court next month.

News comenter: ( explains why both got charged)
This man hit this little girl upside the head. Her mother then hit her again for crying and she fell into the wall. This poor little girl had to have surgery on her skull because they actually cracked it! I saw pictures of this little girl after her surgery and I cried. My son is almost 5 and if anyone ever hurt him like that no one would stop me from getting to them. I work with this little girl's aunt and I hope she gets custody of her because her mother obviously has no sense what so ever.
I know that accidents happen but hitting a 3 year old upside the head is not right. Hitting her hard enough to knock her into a wall is ridiculous. As of right now the mother is not allowed near her without supervision. My heart goes out to this little girl. This whole thing disgusts me!! I can say i know the couple and some of the inside info. Honestly how can people say innocent until proven guilty?? What does it take for you to believe they are guilty??
This little girl was on machines to breathe! She had 2 brian sugeries! 3 year olds should not have to go through that for no reason, no child should! The facts are they admitted to hitting her in the head and admitted to pushing her down! They are guilty!! If they can admitt to it then how are they innocent?? No child or person ever deserves to be hit.
But spanking children has been a way of parenting since our parents were little! Right or wrong it happens everyday. But in this case these 2 people severly hurt this little girl and if they except what they did then they should except the consiquences with out a doubt! i do not condone hitting children. I for one was in a real abusive realtionship and i can say it really messes you up. .......
Parents are suppose to love and protect their children! They are suppose to be rolemodels! And yes no body is the perfect parent but there is a line of right and wrong. If you cant deal with the tantrums, fits , attitude (all of which is a part of parenting)then give that child to people who can!! All kids deserve love not violence! And i for one think the story of this little girl we can all learn something and maybe she will be the angel who opens everyones eyes and our justice system will finally take a stand and say enough is enough!! And these 2 will get what they deserve!!!!An innocent child suffered-she was beat, choked, & thrown into a wall-rendering her unconcious. She had to have brain surgery. She may have physical and mental impairments for the rest of her life. She will be in pain for a long time as she heals. The child "had bruises near her right ear, on her right temple and her legs and torso...Further bruising indicated the girl had been choked." She's apparently had surgeries because of these injuries.
The alleged -and accused- perpetrators were released from police custody.
