DALLAS - Police records say a man arrested in the death of his girlfriend's six-year-old son admitted to beating the child because he wouldn't listen.

Anthony Beckett was arrested in the death of Christopher Dotson, who lived with his mother at the Southwind Apartments in the 9900 block of Brockbank Drive in northwest Dallas.

"I am hurt by it," said Heather Martinez, a leasing manager at the apartment complex. "It's really sad because he was a very happy boy."

Martinez said she knew both Dotson's mother and the young boy.

According to court documents, paramedics found the boy without any clothing and covered in vomit. Records state that Beckett told paramedics that the child "was in the tub as a form of punishment, meaning that he would dunk the child under water for seconds at a time."

Investigators said Beckett admitted to hitting the boy multiple times with a belt and kept him from school on Tuesday to beat him all day.

According to court documents, Beckett said he punched the child in the stomach and previously struck him on the butt with an open hand until his hands hurt.

Martinez said the mother never voiced any concerns.

"She didn't say anything," she said.

Apparently, the mother and Beckett had been dating for a few weeks.

"She was a very nice mom, hard working [and] always trying to provide for her son," Martinez said. "[She is] real friendly and nice, a nice mom."

According to police, Beckett said he hit Christopher in the stomach and repeatedly hit in with a fabric and leather belt, all over his body. The 24-year-old allegedly said he did it because the child 'wouldn't obey'.

Martinez said she overheard Beckett talking to police on Tuesday. "He was just talking about how his form of punishment was to put him in the bathtub," she claimed.

Neighbor Donald Cook said he heard Beckett beating Christopher. "He was saying, 'No Daddy. No Daddy. Stop Daddy.' Then you would hear running water for about 30 minutes," the man explained.

Cook said he heard the scenario happen repeatedly throughout the day Tuesday and that he regrets not calling police, but had no idea how bad things were.

Martinez says Erica Dotson lived at the complex with her son and recently started dating Beckett.

Until the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office completes an autopsy on Thursday, Beckett is charged with Injury to a Child and remains in jail on a $1.5 million bond.

Based on the medical examiner's determination of the cause of death, charges against Beckett could be upgraded to Capital Murder.

Dallas police arrested the mother of a 6-year-old boy Thursday night on accusations that she failed to report that her live-in boyfriend was beating the child in the days before he died.

Erica Dotson faces a charge of injury to a child, a first-degree felony, in the death of Christopher Dotson, police said.

Her boyfriend, Anthony Lamar Beckett, 24, previously was arrested on the same charge after he told police he beat the child all day and pushed him underwater in the days before his death Tuesday.

"She knew what the suspect was doing," said Sgt. Brenda Nichols, commander of the child abuse unit.

State law requires that anybody who is aware of child abuse report it, Nichols said.

The Dallas County medical examiner has ruled Christopher’s cause of death a homicide by blunt force injuries and possible drowning.

Christopher was found Monday afternoon unresponsive on the floor and covered in bruises at a northwest Dallas apartment in the 9900 block of Brockbank Drive, near Walnut Hill Lane, according to court records.
Beckett told the paramedics that he had put the boy in the bathtub as a form of punishment, “meaning that he would dunk the [child] under water for seconds at a time,” according to the records.

He told detectives that he started to beat Christopher on Sunday and struck him again when he arrived home from school Monday. He struck the boy repeatedly with a fabric and leather belt all over his body, he told investigators, according to court records.

"She was a very nice mom, hard working [and] always trying to provide for her son," Martinez said. "[She is] real friendly and nice, a nice mom."

Sweet child, he endured days of beatings and his "sweet mom", did nothing to stop his abuse. I am so glad she has been arrested, I want to see her punished to the full extent, she is just as guilty as if she had beat little Christopher herself...
I can't imagine the absolute terror Christopher must have felt. He was being beat mercilessly all the while the one person who should have saved him from harm let him down in the worst way. I damn you Erica Dotson, you are no mother.

Erika Dotson, 28, told police that days before her son, Christopher Dotson, died, she gave him "three pops with the belt" for not putting away his toys, according to court records. Her boyfriend, 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Beckett, then asked Christopher if "he liked being bad," and when the boy answered yes, he began beating the child, Dotson told investigators.

According to records, Dotson then said, "Once I saw Christopher turn dark red, I yelled at Anthony to stop, and he did."

Paramedics found Christopher on Tuesday afternoon unresponsive on the floor of a northwest Dallas apartment in the 9900 block of Brockbank Drive near Walnut Hill Lane and Webb Chapel Road, according to court records. The boy was naked and covered in vomit and bruises.

Beckett told police he began beating the child Sunday and held him underwater in the bathtub as punishment. He told police he beat the child again when he returned from school Monday and all day Tuesday.

Beckett was arrested on a charge of first-degree felony injury to a child.

Dallas man sentenced to 80 years in beating death of girlfriend's 6-year-old son

Earlier Wednesday, the same jury found Anthony Beckett guilty of injury to a child in the death of 6-year-old Christopher Dotson.

Beckett repeatedly dunked the child under water in a bathtub and beat him until his muscles bled in January 2009. The blood from his muscles then filled his body.

Beckett told Dallas police he thought the boy would grow up and kill him.

One of Beckett's defense attorneys, Russell Wilson told jurors that they should consider Beckett's mental illness when deciding his sentence.

Beckett's history includes a hospitalization at age 21, when he was experiencing delusions. But prosecutors contend those delusions were from smoking marijuana laced with embalming fluid, commonly called "wet." Beckett denied on the witness stand that he ever smoked "wet" but said he had used drugs.

"Mental illness isn't the same as being normal," Wilson said. "And the sentence in this case shouldn't be normal."

Beckett and his family testified in a plea for the jury to deliver a lesser sentence and even probation. But in finding Beckett guilty, the jury rejected Beckett's contention that he was so mentally ill that he did not know that beating Christopher was wrong. He could have been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Okay I have a problem with saying he is mentally ill when his problems stem from a drug habit. He was not born with a mental problem, he chose to damage his brain with very lethal illegal drugs combinations.
