Harmit Bhangu thought someone looked abnormal

When Harmit Bhangu arrived at a Moorhead rest stop on Sunday, he heard God order him to kill another truck driver who looked abnormal to him.

Without saying a word, Bhangu approached Dale Morigeau and began repeatedly stabbing him, swinging the knife in a circular motion.

Morigeau yelled to a woman for help, saying, “He’s going to kill me” as Bhangu stabbed him eight to 10 times.

Police found Bhangu holding onto the chest and neck area of Morigeau, who was covered in blood and suffering from multiple stab wounds, including one near his heart. Morigeau, 51, has undergone surgery and is listed in critical condition but is expected to live.

After he was taken into custody, Bhangu said he also had assaulted a man in Beach, N.D. – roughly 350 miles away – the day before.

When police asked Bhangu if he had killed the person in Beach, Bhangu asked where the person was, saying he wanted to kill him right now. He then reiterated wanting to kill Morigeau saying he knew it was wrong to kill people but God had ordered him to do it.

Bhangu was in Beach on Saturday, but authorities do not believe he harmed anyone. Bhangu called authorities at 12:45 a.m. Saturday and reported that two men were making racial slurs at him at the Flying J Travel Plaza in Beach, but the men were no longer there when officers arrived. Investigators are checking surveillance footage, but have not found indications of an assault.

Bhangu, of Chestermere, Alberta, has caused several problems since his arrest and been violent toward jail staff. Bhangu was placed on medications to keep him from being violent in the jail. Bhangu was hospitalized after repeatedly banging his head against his cell wall.

Bhangu also is accused of attacking a police detective who was interviewing him. While discussing his religion, Sikhism, with police, Bhangu asked if the detective wanted to be a part of that religion. When the detective said he did not know, Bhangu then reached up with his right hand, which was in a cast, and struck the detective in his face.

The detective became momentarily disoriented from the incident, and was knocked out of his chair.

Bhangu then stood up from his seat in an aggressive manner, staring at the detective as he called out for help from other officers. Officers ended up using a Taser on Bhangu.

Bhangu is originally from India, where his wife currently lives.

Bhangu was surrounded by four sheriff’s deputies during a court appearance and appeared a bit disoriented. When asked if Bhangu would need an interpreter, his attorney responded that he was having a hard time determining how much Bhangu does understand because he was so medicated at the time.

The judge ordered a psychological evaluation for Bhangu and said his English language skills also should be determined.

Maybe he caught a glimpse of himself in a mirror and mistakenly thought it was the other guy. He certainly looks abby-normal to me.

I don't know for sure that the victim is Native American but I think he is. Morigeau is a common name on the Flathead Indian Reservation (Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes) where Dale Morigeau lives. If I am wrong, my apologies....
Anyway, I wonder if that's why this whackjob thought he "looked abnormal"

This poor guy did nothing to deserve being stabbed and nearly killed. I hope he recovers and can be back with his family soon.

Harmit Bhangu, 33, was found not guilty by reason of insanity on a charge of second-degree attempted murder Thursday in Clay County District Court, a verdict by Judge Michael Kirk that the prosecutor did not challenge in order to strike a plea deal forcing Bhangu to be deported.

County Attorney Brian Melton offered no evidence to contest a determination by a state psychiatrist that Bhangu’s psychotic behavior – diagnosed as schizophreniform disorder, a precursor to schizophrenia – showed he was unable to understand the nature of his crimes.

Bhangu told police that he stabbed Dale Morigeau on Jan. 11 because God told him the fellow truck driver was an evil abnormal giant, and God wanted him to kill evil people to save the U.S. and Canada. He also told officers he got messages from God via his long hair and that a turban he wore was impervious to bullets and swords.

Prosecutors already tried to have Bhangu committed to the state hospital earlier this year. Doctors released him after several months of treatment, saying Bhangu was mentally ill but not dangerous, a decision that Melton called “absurd.”

“In my mind, we tried to do the right thing the first time,” he said.

Because he already was deemed not dangerous, it’s likely Bhangu would have gone free shortly after he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Defendants found not guilty on those grounds are examined for commitment, but Bhangu was rejected for commitment in August.

So instead of fighting the insanity defense, Melton cut a deal with Bhangu’s lawyer, Kenneth Kludt. He wouldn’t contest the defense on attempted murder as long as Bhangu agreed to plead guilty to one of the two assault charges he also faced for striking a police detective while being question about the stabbing.

Melton said Bhangu will be sentenced at a later date to the time he’s served in jail since the attack. Upon sentencing, he’ll be held on an immigration hold until he’s deported. The assault conviction requires automatic deportation and bars Bhangu from ever returning to the U.S., Melton said.

Given the legal “catch-22,” deportation was the best option from a public-safety perspective, Melton said, though he admitted it was frustrating.

Bhangu was working in Canada, having been given permanent residency after moving to Calgary in 2003. He is originally from India, and he practices the Sikh religion. Bhangu plans on being deported to Canada or India, Kludt said.

AGHHH! No, keep him away from my country! His wifey is in India, ship him back there. Better yet, keep his crazy ass locked in a ward, where he can't hurt anyone else in any country.
