Kimberly Petretti killed mom with assault rifle

A woman facing eviction from her Pinole home stands accused of shooting her mother in the head with an assault weapon before surrendering to police.

A call about a disturbance summoned officers to a house in the 4000 block of Marcas Street at 7:51 a.m. Sunday.

There they found 43-year-old Kimberly Petretti sitting at the curb. She told them to check inside.

Officers searching the house found 62-year-old Claudia Petretti dead in an upstairs room.

"It looks like the mother and daughter lived together. We have no motive at this point," Chief Paul Clancy said. "They were going to be evicted."

Detectives found an eviction paper that indicated the pair were supposed to be off the property at 6 a.m. Sunday. The house showed no signs of a preparation for the move.

"It looks like the victim was watching television in an upstairs sitting room" when she was shot in the head, Clancy said.

Police found an AR-15 rifle inside the house that they believe the younger Petretti used to shoot her mother. Detectives have had difficulty tracing the weapon.

Officers arrested Kimberly Petretti on suspicion of murder and booked her into County Jail in Martinez.

A Pinole woman charged with murder Wednesday may have planned to kill herself after fatally shooting her mother.

Police who discovered 62-year-old Claudia Petretti dead at the home she shared with daughter Kimberly Petretti, 43, also found a two-page letter in which the daughter contemplates her and her mother's deaths,

The women were being evicted and were supposed to leave their home at 6 a.m. Sunday. The family's financial troubles may have been motivation for the killing.

The evidence points to Claudia Petretti having no knowledge of any killing-suicide plan; she was sitting in an upstairs bedroom watching TV and playing solitaire when she turned her head and Kimberly Petretti shot her in the face with an AR-15 assault rifle.

Police still are investigating the origins of the gun.

Whether Kimberly Petretti was considering suicide or planned to go through with it is still being investigated.
