An Elmont mother was charged with assaulting one of her children on Jan. 7 at 9:30 a.m., Nassau Police say.
Anna Candanedo, 25, was at her Keifer Avenue home with her son and daughter, 8-month old twins, when she violently shook the female infant because the child would not stop crying, causing the baby to sustain internal head injuries, according to detectives with the Child Abuse Section of the Special Services Squad.
Candanedo then called 911 when she noticed her daughter in apparent distress, and the baby was transported to Winthrop University Medical Center, where she underwent surgery to remove pressure on the brain. Her condition is critical at this time.
Candanedo was charged with reckless assault of a child, a felony, and will be arraigned on Jan. 8 at First District Court in Hempstead. Her son has been placed in temporary custody of Child Protective Services, cops say.
