Little Joan
It has been almost 62 years since anyone in Joan Gay Croft's family has seen her. Her abduction by two men wearing khaki clothing has never been explained despite nationwide attention. Which only leaves us wondering: What happened to Joan Gay Croft and can she still be alive?
On the night of April 9, 1947 an unexpected tornado formed and swept through Texas destroying everything in it's path without warning. It has been described as one of the 10 most devastating twisters of all time, with a total of 185 lives taken and injuring more than 700 people.
Joan Gay's family was one of many who had great tragedy that night. The storm killed her mother and left her father, H.O. Croft, critically injured. The two girls both had injures which were non-life threatening and were treated at Woodward Hospital along with other family members. There were many people coming into the hospital that needed emergency care and since no one was actively there to tend to the girls, they were moved down to the basement for the night. Their aunt was staying in the hospital that night with her mother who was also badly injured. She checked on the girls before they went to bed and told them she would be back in the morning. The problem was, 4-year-old Joan wasn't there in the morning.
According to her half-sister Jerry, two men dressed in khaki clothing came into the hospital asking for Joan Croft by name. After identifying herself, the men removed her by stretcher to a waiting car. She protested and screamed that she wanted to stay with her sister, but no one noticed the abduction that was taking place. Officials assumed that a mistake was made and they would find her at another hospital in the area. As the days went by and residents were accounted for, Joan Gay never resurfaced and could not be located on any hospital list or with any family members.

This website claims to had found an interview done with a relative of Joan's. They claim that they had many leads throughout the years from woman who think they may be the kidnapped girl. One promising lead was from a woman residing in Canada who grew up with the first name Joann and middle name Gay. She had a picture that was signed as "O. Croft" which is partially Joan's father's name. The forum post on this site was very encouraging to see, however, this particular post was from 2003, which claims the interview took place in 1998. When another member attempted to contact the email address in regards to the story, it didn't exist and neither does the original interview anymore.
Is it possible that she is still alive after all these years? Is it possible that she doesn't remember the traumatizing night? I don't know, but I do know that there seemed to be a glimmer of hope with that interview and can only hope that the family gets some answers along with closure in this case.
