Maldonano,
a citizen of Mexico, remained jail Friday, Lee County Jail records show. He has one previous arrest in Lee County – for driving while license suspended dating to 2007.
A deputy was sent to the scene of a hit-and-run crash that occurred before 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Another deputy found the vehicle that had left the scene.
The second deputy was following the car, a Ford Taurus that was traveling at a “very low rate of speed and swerving all over the roadway.”
The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, which pulled into a driveway in the 11000 block of Torchfire Drive, a block-and-a-half away from the initial crash scene. The victim told deputies she was at Torchfire and Calypso waiting to make a turn when the Ford made a wide turn onto Torchfire and hit her vehicle broadside. The child was in a safety restraint and uninjured. No other injuries were reported.
The deputy wrote he could smell a strong odor of alcohol and vomit from inside the car and
saw a large amount of vomit on the passenger seat and the driver’s shirt.
The victim identified Maldonado as the man who was driving the car which struck her car twice.
After being arrested, Maldonado was taken to jail where deputies gave him a breath test. Both times he registered 0.229, more than three times the 0.08 considered to be driving drunk in Florida.
