Hutchinson police are investigating a Christmas morning homicide. Officers found the body of 30-year-old Sabrina Jones in her apartment, and they arrested her husband within hours for murder.
Police supervisors say they went to Jones' apartment in the 3200 block of Garden Grove after a phone call early Thursday that concerned them. They found Jones' body shortly after 1:30 a.m.
"It's a tragic event," said Captain Troy Hoover with Hutchinson PD, "and it makes it that much more tragic when it occurs on Christmas Day."
Capt. Hoover says police had information Jones' husband may have had something to do with her death, and he was arrested around 4:30 a.m. at a family member's home in southeast Hutchinson.
Thursday afternoon, police released Jones' apartment to her family members so they could remove some of her belongings. A somber group of three men worked Christmas afternoon, only managing to say, "It's a really, really bad day."
Neighbors were surprised to wake up to crime scene tape nearby on Christmas morning.
"It's a terrible thing," said George Harbert, standing across the street from the apartment complex. "I mean, any day it's a bad day to have something like this happen, but at Christmas time when people are with their families, you hate to see this thing. It's just a tragedy."
Police have not released how Jones died and are likely to wait until an autopsy, tentatively scheduled for Friday, is finished.
Capt. Hoover says Jones has three children, none of whom were at the apartment when she was killed. Police don't believe there were any witnesses to the homicide.
Jones' husband is in the Reno County Jail on suspicion of first degree murder. His bond is set at $500,000, and he could face a judge early next week. State corrections records show the man has a criminal history in Reno County that includes violence.
Capt. Hoover says police are still looking for more information on this case. If you know anything call (620) 694-2833.
