An 88-year old woman took matters in her own hands when a man broke into her house early Tuesday morning.

The elderly woman was in her home on SE 287th Avenue in Gresham in her bathrobe at 6:30 a.m. when a naked man walked through the sliding door.

The man, not saying a word, forced her face down into a chair, but the woman reached behind and grabbed the man's groin. In her words, "I grabbed his cojones and gave 'em a good squeeze".

Her grip was enough to make the man run away the way he had walked in.

A Multnomah County Code Enforcement Officer happened to be in the area and heard the call come out over his radio. He parked at SE 287th and Division and saw two cars drive by him. The officer got the license plate information that allowed Troutdale officers to locate the car in the vicinity.

The driver, identified as Michael G. Dick, 46, of Gresham, who matched the description of the suspect, was detained, questioned by Multnomah County detectives and then booked on charges of burglary, harassment and private indecency charges, with bail currently set at $110,000. Other charges are pending.

A man who broke into an elderly woman’s home and was on the verge of sexually assaulting her – until she took matters into her own hands – will spend 16 months in prison.

Michael Gordon Dick, 47, of Troutdale had pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary and no contest to attempted sex abuse in May

Prosecuting attorney Annie Schoen had hoped for five years of prison time for the defendant. However, doctors testified that medication Dick took for Parkinson’s disease increased his libido.

One prescription he started taking shortly before the attack also causes what is described as an impulse control disorder.

“It’s a complex problem,” said defense attorney Thomas Ifversen. “It sounds wacky: ‘The medicine made me do it.’ But it’s a real thing.”

Schoen disagreed with that.

Arresting officers recognized the man as the same one they arrested earlier in the year for masturbating in a car near a school bus. Dick also matched the physical description, and his vehicle matched the suspect’s vehicle description, of a man who exposed himself to a woman in Gresham in 2007 – long before any drug-induced impulse-control issues would have surfaced, Schoen said.

As part of his sentence, Dick must register as a sex offender and undergo sex-offender treatment.
