Elizabeth Vargas will report from Italy, where a verdict is expected in the trial of American college student Amanda Knox who is accused of murdering her British roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007, just six weeks after arriving to study abroad in the quaint, medieval town of Perugia, Italy. I don't think she did either. One, I think she was coerced into admitting guilt. Then, the fingerprints they say are all over the murder weapon and the areas in the home that concluded she was involved...ummm, they lived together, her fingerprints are going to be everywhere. I don't know how, maybe they do things differently in the court of law over there, but just the fact that they say she did it cause her fingerprints were on the weapon and she lived there leads me to believe it's possible she didn't do it.

I don't even think the knife they are claiming is the murder weapon is actually the murder weapon. She should have left when she had that window of opportunity right at the beginning. The pros is a nutter. He thinks there is a whole gang load of Satanists in Italy and that Amanda was one of them. It would be laughable if it wasn't so goddamn scary.

I was watching the news the day the verdict came back, and a friend of the family was saying that an Italian legal consult of some sort was saying that rarely do people win during the first round, that, more commonly, cases are overturned on appeal. I don't know the legitimacy of that statement, but it was also reported that, even if the conviction was overturned at the earliest possible opportunity, the soonest she would get out is 6 years from now.
The Italian justice system is a joke. Following this case has really made me thankful for what we've got in the U.S., as far from flawless as it may be.

If she loses the 1st appeal it could take over 5 years on the 2nd, however without actually knowing their legal system, it would be best to at least understand the system before calling it a joke. Feeling like we're better is part of the ugly American thing.
Many seem to always disagree with how counties handle their affairs if they don't meet our so-called standards of dealing with situations, whatever those are.
Many countries feel the US is barbaric because of the death penalty and feel if someone is given death why do they get to hang around and appeal for 20 years.
Funny thought just hit me, the US has been around for a few years while these other counties have always existed compared to the US, Americans sometimes remind me of the nouveau rich

Way to be offensive and condescending to Americans on a personal level. Just a note, but all countries evolve and the US didn't just magically appear. This continent has been around just as long as any of the others. Yes, the government is newer than a lot of others, but who gives a fuck? You're implying that because a government has been through more cycles, it's somehow inherently better, which is utter garbage.
I get that it's popular to hate Americans on a social level, but this is the first place in a long time I've felt like someone was spewing hatred of Americans just for the fact that they are Americans, rather than because of their political decisions and whatnot. I know I didn't phrase that well, but I'm a little disheartened and angry right now, please forgive me.

No, what you're doing is crass and ugly. I don't care enough about you to go read through my sources regarding the crime, but a lot of the early media focused on the way the investigation was mishandled.
My problem with her presence in Italy's prison isn't because I think she should be in an American prison, it's because I don't think she should be in prison. Is that clear enough? Stop making wild assumptions that don't have any bearing on my beliefs and then spew them as generalizations. Just stop.

It's not that "we're" better - we're all humans and prone to making mistakes. But I do believe the U.S. system is set up better. The prosecuting attorney is being investigated for abuse of office related to another case, there are widespread reports of evidence mishandling (and they don't have regulations as strict as those in the U.S. relating to the handling of evidence), they don't sequester the jury down there, so jurors can read all the biased publicity, talk about it with random people, etc... and these are system flaws that are not conducive to justice.
It's not an "us" vs. "them" thing. I'm simply critical of anything that impedes objective justice, no matter where it is. And the Italian justice system has some significant flaws to that end. These are not opinions, they're observations.

That can't be the only thing a case hinges on, though, especially when there are language barriers and questionable interrogations. The prosecution wasn't even able to provide a motive.

So how did it get there ? I would be more inclined to believe her story if the knife was indeed found in the home she and Meredith shared .
