Janet Adams, convinced people she had psychic powers.

    Janet Adams, 42

A San Mateo woman who advertised herself as a psychic has been arrested for allegedly bilking an 85-year-old woman of more than $80,000 by falsely claiming that both their husbands would die if the woman didn't hand over money, authorities said Friday.

Janet Adams, 42, was arrested Thursday night and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail at San Mateo County Jail.

Her alleged victim visited her Psychic and Crystal Vision shop in the Laurelwood Shopping Center in San Mateo "on a lark" in January for a tarot reading, said Steve Wagstaffe, San Mateo County's chief deputy district attorney.

Adams persuaded her to make return trips, Wagstaffe said. On her third visit, Adams began to shake and cry, telling the woman that her husband would die of a heart attack if she didn't immediately pay $13,000 for "special prayers," the prosecutor said.

The woman promptly went to the bank and got the money, authorities said.

At the woman's next visit, Adams told her that her own husband was in the hospital and needed money for treatment or would die, Wagstaffe said. The woman gave her $9,000.

On subsequent visits, Adams made up stories about having to pay for her now-dead husband's funeral and for a son's medical treatments, Wagstaffe said.In all, the woman handed over $80,330 to Adams, prosecutors said.

The alleged scam came to light when the woman's husband noticed that she was making large, regular withdrawals from their bank account. The woman told her husband what happened and they notified police.

Adams has victimized numerous women in San Mateo County in the past and was sent to state prison in 2004 for two years on a theft conviction, authorities said. At that time, Adams worked as a palm reader at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival.

She was arraigned Friday on charges of theft from an elderly victim and an enhancement alleging the loss was more than $65,000.Adams is the second purported psychic in recent weeks to run afoul of the law in the Bay Area.

In September, 27-year-old Lisa Marie Miller of San Francisco pleaded no contest to theft by false pretense in Santa Clara County for bilking a customer out of $108,000 and talking her into buying her a sports car in exchange for purifying her of evil spirits. She was sentenced Dec. 10 to two months in county jail.

Whoever reads this post will have bad luck for a really long time and get the flu. If you send me money and get a flu shot, I will say extra special prayers for you, and you won't have bad luck or get the flu.
Hey, it worked for her, might as well give it a shot.
I actually do tarot readings. Good ones. Only, my dog ate a card outta my deck( I swear that is true!), so I need a new one, but I can't buy it for myself, so if you replace my deck, I'll give you a free reading!

Where should I send the new deck?

I need a reading before visiting my in-laws. I just want to know if it is safe for them to have me there.

Oh that's an easy one. Don't even need a full deck.
Of course it's important to realize, that the future is never certain, as it changes with each decision you make, I do a three card reading, based on past present future... soooo here is said reading.....
The past, I see some sort of confrontation, a disagreement of some sort. Possibly things said that shouldn't have been
The present represents a time of uncertainty and being uncomfortable/nervous/jittery.
The future: I'm sensing something darkish here, there's going to be some sort of falling out. I see either blocked communication, or too much communication. You need to be very careful of what you say with them. It's a sublte balancing act. A Happy Holidays is possible, but it will take effort, and much turning the other cheek.

    This is my deck.

Tell me what card your dog ate and I will tell YOU your fortune???
I sure hope it wasnt the "Wheel of Fortune" or "Justice card".

The above was pulled outta my ars... This is the real deal

    Past:

The presence of the fiery sword's master in a reading can indicate that there is (or there is a need for) clear and focused will and a determination to carry through on decisions, even if much effort is required. Or he can tell us that such will and strength is present in regard to the issues under consideration. The querent needs to consider how he is expressing his will and strength and how that expression may be enhanced or improved. It is this Singer's energy that enables us to burst the bonds of an outgrown way of being and move on to the next level. He indicates that this is a time to take action based on clear spiritual will. His presence indicates great strength and great potential for good. It also reminds us that, if we call upon him, we will receive assistance. The presence of this card in a reading radiates strength and will to the cards around it.

    Present
Things are in motion and the outcome is impossible to predict. A cool head is required to deal with this, as is a readiness to jump in whatever direction seems appropriate. Exercise cool judgement while staying ready for the unpredictable. Sudden changes of fortune may appear good or bad, but they are in flux and can be rechanneled if necessary. Develop poise, stay calm. You can come out a winner here, but it is likely to take concentrated effort. Use power with delicacy and discretion.

    Future
What we see here is mental quickness, adaptability, and enthusiasm. Ideas and opinions abound. A few are brilliant, but others vary from mediocre to downright silly. Be selective. Mental and psychic abilities may be awakening. Independent thinking is in operation. New ideas and new versions of old ideas are creating an exciting effervescent atmosphere. Avoid excess. Minds may change often as new ideas and new ways of seeing bubble to the surface. Out of conflict and confusion, resolved by good will and clear thinking, a new and better understanding may come.

Cool! You do Tarot readings as well? I've been reading, studying and collecting Tarot and oracles for over 20 years! It's a major passion of mine. It's also an intense part of my spiritual path.

I have almost 400 decks so far! LOVE them all! As you can see my avatar is a cat readind a deck...the Baroque Bohemian Cats Tarot! Heehee.

Stories and crimes like these make Tarot readers and such all look like scam artists, it makes me so angry I say the old woman should share the blame for being such a fool retard, she was in her 80's she should have had SOME wisdom by that

What deck(s) have you used? Have you ever read professionally? I've read professionally for many years, but not in the last few years...at fairs, shops, cafes, parks....all over!

ETA: Are you joking about not being able to buy your own deck?? I ask because that's one of those hog twaddle silly myths that crop up about Tarot all the time!

Oops saw you mentioned what deck you use, The Froud Faeries! That's an oracle, not Tarot tho. Do you use Tarot as well?

I have a question that I'd like a professional Tarot card reader's opinion on in regard to the story that started this thread. Is it common (or accepted as ethical) among Tarot readers to claim to have psychic powers beyond a talent in reading the cards and normal intuition?

You got more Decks than me Owd Scrat, but I probly have more Tarot books than you. I use The Goddess Tarot or "The Inner Child Tarot Cards" the most.

    The Goddess Tarot

    The Inner Child Tarot Cards

That kind of depends upon a few things, you have your old school readers ( like Gypsy's) and your new school readers, If its old school I would say no. They mostly put on a dog and pony show anyways, like this lady. I have met a few cool ones but mostly there scam artists. The new school ones I know are psychic's who just happen to read as well. Or its just one of the things they do.

My great, great Granny, even came from Romanian Gypsys.

I absolutely adore the Inner Child Cards! The art is completely enchanting and vivid! I've never liked the Goddess Tarot, I had it but traded it away awhile ago.

Hmmmm wanna bet about the books! Heehee books are my first and main love, so I've got 100's of books on Tarot....from the very old to the newest. Now the books I've never attempted to count tho. I've only taught some, not a bunch.....I have zero paitence!

My decks that I use can change around a lot...or sometimes not. Right now I am using the Bohemian Gothic regular and Silver editon, Victorian Romantic Tarot Gold Edition and Authrian (Hallowquest) Tarot. I was gifted a copy of the new Transparent Tarot by the creator but haven't worked with it much....now that decks is a trip! See thru cards. Maybe we should start a thread on this or something, I'm hijacking this one lol.

No, from my time in various Reader Studios and at Fairs and things as that I don't see it as very common among ETHICAL readers. You see it everywhere among the BS scam artists tho. I mean a fair amount claim to have some psychic ability that the cards enhance and give them a boost up....but there not the majority....no.

Ok, you probly have more Tarot books than me, but only because I gave a bunch away and only have like 50 left. I havent seen thoughs "Victorian Romantic Tarot", thoughs are HOT!! , I might go get them as Christmas presant for my self. The inner child cards are nice to use with people, its easyer on them and they dont look threatning or have a death card. Plus the symbol / images speak to them better.

    Thank you!
I guess I shouldn't mention that a 13 yr old should not have a pierced lip, tongue, cheek and eyebrow? Hmmm, that will be tough...

no attacks please, I have multiple piercings and tattoos, just don't think that a 13 yr old should. way too young.

First of all - christalmighty! That woman is 42???? She looks like she could be my grandmother!

I had my cards read once, at a party for fun. I got a bad reading - all bad news. The woman who read the cards felt terrible about it and told me to come back in a few weeks for another reading (for free) but I never did. I didn't believe in it and forgot all about it. It was years later, after experiencing everything she told me about, that I even remembered the reading. She was right...

I have a friend who uses runes...very interesting.

This is the only deck I use. It might seem silly, but I have a connection with it. I've used other decks that belonged to friends when some one wanted a reading and my deck wasn't available, and the readings were crap, and didn't make any sense at all. I'm not sure why, but its just the only deck I've been able to work with. I'm not sure if the readings didn't turn out because it wasn't my deck, or what. When working with my cards, I can tell if it was a good reading or not even before I flip the cards. And by good reading, I mean helpful and insightful, not good news vs bad news.
Bash this if you want, but I think the reason that the readings work for me with this deck, is because I believe that faeries are real, and if a person is properly centered and open while doing a reading, the faeries guide them to which cards to pick. I always let the person getting the reading chose the cards, although I know every body does it their own way. I'm far from a professional, although you could say I've been doing it for almost five years, I don't do it often enough to count.

The reason I don't buy my own deck is actually because I feel guilty whenever I buy myself anything.

No ones going to bash you about it sanityslipping, at least I am not going to, connecting to your deck is important and if that one works best there is nothing wrong with that. Its all about the symbols anyways and how they talk to you. You shouldn't feel bad about buying stuff for yourself, unless your spending all your money on it. You can even use one of the extra cards to make a new one. To make your deck complete. All the decks come with header cards, just write the old name on that one and use it instead.

You must have gotten some flack in the past about reading with this deck? Tarot readers and lifetime students CAN be very elitist and snobby....I've certainly run into that time and again. But I love Tarot and oracles. I use Tarot much more but I love the flexibilty and wide range of oracles. Where as Tarot has more of set form....oracles can be anything from rocks, the wind, leaves, water, fire, cards....there really is no set form or tradition. One of the many reasons I love them.

I was far from intending to bash you! I was just curious if you read Tarot as well. I happen to LOVE the Froud Faeries myself. Wonderful and powerful deck.

As far as faeries, I have been studying, learning and growing in Faery Seership. (Faery Faith....Orion Foxwood, RJ Stewart etc.) I certainly believe in them myself. Though very far from what the mainstream contemporary people think of them. (winged disney types flitting about with only good in their hearts or mischief in there mind....you know what I mean!) More the ancient and profound folk tradition. I've been intensely involved with it for about 13 years now. So there is a believer here

So no need to worry about at least me "bashing" any oracles.

i used to read Tarot & i used to be very good at it. then the stroke & i can barely remember my own name. i'm using candle meditation at the moment & you'd be really surprised at how well it works for me. i've got a friend very far away & she was amazed that i knew she had another "man" around. her dh is a quad with alzheimers so i don't begrudge her or judge her.
