Police reveal new detail in death of Tavares toddler Suspect was "aggressive" with children
TAVARES - Police released new details today about the December death of a Tavares toddler, after his mother's boyfriend was charged with the child's death yesterday.
David Tatara, 27, faces one count each of second degree murder and aggravated child abuse in connection with the death of 15-month-old Blake Rupe.
He was released from the Lake County Jail last night after posting $60,000 bond.
On December 15, Tatara called 911 and told the operator that Blake had been injured. Tavares Police officers and paramedics arrived at Tatara's apartment and found Blake struggling to breathe. The toddler was taken to Florida Hospital Waterman, then to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died two days later, according to a probable cause affidavit.
At the time of the incident, Tatara was caring for Blake and his two-year-old sister. The mother of the children, Emmalee Fore, 21, was at work. Tatara told police that he'd left Blake alone in a playpen and was in a different room when he heard a loud "thud" and screaming from Blake's bedroom. When he went to check on Blake, he said he found the toddler on the floor and the play pen overturned, according to the affidavit.
Tatara initially told police that he had left the room to check his e-mail, but in his written statement, he said he was getting ready to take a shower, according to the affidavit.
An autopsy revealed the Blake died from a skull fracture, and his death was declared a homicide.
The medical examiner told police that the child's injuries were too severe to be caused by a tumble from his play pen, according to the affidavit.
Investigators also found vomit in Blake's playpen, indicating that he had been vomiting before the crib was overturned, according to the affidavit.
When investigators spoke to Fore, she told them that Tatara was often very aggressive with her children, especially when they cried, and investigators concluded that Tatara likely became angry with Blake and hurt him, leading to his death, according to the affidavit.
"I think it's important to stress that we're by no means done," said Tavares Police Chief Stoney Lubins. "This is the first step to trying to unravel what happened on December 15."
