Dallas Derrick "fell" with a 3 year old

A 27 year old Benson, Utah man is behind bars tonight charged with severely abusing a 3 year old girl. Dallas Derrick is charged with 3rd degree felony child abuse. Police said Wednesday night he wandered out of field on the Northwest side of Logan, in his arms was the three year old girl police say she was bleeding from the nose and mouth and was not responsive.

Derrick told police he was walking through the field from his home in Benson about 3 to 5 miles away and was hoping to surprise the girl's mother. He says he fell while carrying the girl and that is how she recieved the injuries.

Police said they don't completely believe the story and say they walked away from questioning Derrick with even more questions, like why was he walking through the field? Police also said that the girl was not dressed for the cold weather.

Derrick has had run-ins with the law before for theft, burglary and for escaping official custody two different times.

The family member we spoke with is shocked her brother has been charged with child abuse, but police and prosecutors say there is enough evidence to pursue the charges.

Derrick remains behind bars. The girl is in critical condition at Primary Children's Medical Center

well he does look like a big guy....he could have hurt her by falling on her. Of course that still doesn't explain why they were walking 3-5 miles in a field and she wasn't dressed for the cold.

He looks like a pretty big boy. I can see serious injury occurring if he fell on top of her. Why wasn't she dressed properly though? That's the question I'm asking. As for walking through a field, well, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Why walk on the side of the road, risking cars, especially if the field is shorter? That's just the country girl in me talking.

3-5 miles is a hell of a walk in the cold though. Especially carrying a toddler. I'd say fuck the surprise, lets have hot cocoa

Ok..ok, I can see your reasoning for taking the field....but come on, taking a 3 year old out not dressed properly to walk 3-5 miles. I wouldn't even take my 4 year old on a 1 mile walk, unless I had a stoller or something. Just doesn't add up.

She's in critical condition; I think he might of raped her and they didn't publish that yet. He has that "I fucking rape kids" look in his eyes. He's too fucking big to be a 3 stooge and be a stumbling idiot. He looks focused and intentional. He was probably going to dump her outside in the cold, no one walks with a child in the cold for miles without concern that she would freeze...he just got stopped beforehand. An angel intervened here, that girl's in critical, she was gonna be dead, believe that...this guy is a monster and we will be seeing more of him!!!!!!! Hopefully always behind bars!

He looks like he's about my husband's build. If Hubby fell on our son, I'm pretty sure our kid wouldn't have all the injuries it sounds like this girl had. He's 13 months and she's 3, so she should be able to handle an accident like that a bit better. It doesn't add up.

I've fallen with babies and toddlers myself... and what I know from that is you contort any way you can in the fall to minimize injury to the child you're carrying. So while I've managed to sustain all manner of sprains, cuts and bruises, the children I've been carrying when falling have all been unscathed. So I might believe some bumps and bruises from a mutual fall, but I'm not buying critical injuries. Heck, my husband is an easy 200lbs, and if he tripped and fell straight on my kid, I don't think it would put her in the PICU. It's weight, but spread out over a large area. I guess I'm saying his family better work on getting over their shock - the news here is only bound to be getting worse about their boy.
