Barry Simpson, 43, has a Facebook and a MySpace page, but it was in a Yahoo! chat room that investigators say his online networking crossed the line.

Simpson, an Economics professor at the University of South Alabama, was busted earlier this month in an undercover online sting involving an FBI agent who posed as a teenage girl.

According to the arrest affidavit, Simpson exchanged multiple messages with the undercover agent from a computer on the USA campus. The affidavit says Simpson sent "two pictures of his erect penis," and then told the agent "I didn't put my face in there because I didn't want to get in trouble."

Angela Tobon, an FBI spokesperson, says when the undercover agent identified himself as a 13 year old girl Simpson replied by saying "okay", and then attempted to set up a meeting with the teen.

During a chat on October 27, Simpson allegedly told the undercover agent he also shared nude photos with a 15 year old girl from Georgia, and forwarded the agent a picture of the girl lifting up her shirt and exposing her breasts.

Simpson used the screen name "going_Mobile2003" and called himself "Sam Jones." Investigators seized evidence from Simpson's office in the Mitchell College of Business during a search warrant on November 17th, according to Tobon.

Well, I got to wondering whatever happened with Barry, and I found this:

MOBILE, Ala. -- A former University of South Alabama professor was sentenced to 5 years and three months in prison today for attempting to send obscene material to a minor.

The sentence for Barry Simpson, 44, was on the high end of the federal sentencing guidelines, according to a spokeswoman in the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida in Miami. Simpson pleaded guilty in June to one count of attempting to send obscene material to a minor. He had been on faculty as an economics professor since 2003, but was fired after entering the guilty plea.

The investigation that led to the arrest began in October last year when Simpson began having conversations with an undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old girl in an online chat room, according to a federal affidavit.

The sentence also requires that Simpson be under three years of surpervision upon his release from prison.

I have to call bullshit on the sentence. It is the same as a felon with a firearm draws and I would rather have a felon have a gun than perverts trying to fuck little girls they meet on the internet!
