The Lexington infant whose father was arrested last week and charged with assaulting the child was in serious condition at University of Kentucky Medical Center Tuesday, according to information from police and the hospital.
Kalei Ann Martin's condition has improved since Nov. 17, when an ambulance took her from the Salvation Army to UK Medical Center, where she was initially listed in critical condition.
Her father, Eric Sylvester Martin, 22, was charged Friday evening with first-degree assault "for causing serious physical injury to his 5½ -week-old infant when he shook the child," Lexington police said.
The infant had been staying at the Salvation Army with her father, Lexington police said.
Eric Martin approached front desk workers at the Salvation Army on Nov. 17 and asked them to call an ambulance because the child was having trouble breathing.
The Salvation Army workers at the desk called for an ambulance, which arrived within a few minutes, and performed CPR on the child.
Police met Eric Martin and his daughter at UK Medical Center about 3:40 p.m. to take a report because it was not clear how the infant became ill. The father was later arrested on an unrelated warrant for a probation violation.
Information from medical doctors and statements from the father helped investigators determine that the child was assaulted. She declined to elaborate on statements police received from Martin.
The child's mother was not present when the ambulance was called to the Salvation Army. But no other information about her whereabouts, and whether she was staying at the Salvation Army, was available Tuesday.
Eric Martin was married in December 2007 to Ashley Nichole Kelly, according to a marriage license. Central Baptist Hospital's Web site showed that Ashley and Eric Martin were parents of Kalei Ann, born Oct. 9 at 5 pounds, 3 ounces and 16¾ inches.
The child's mother could not be reached for comment.
