An Avondale man was arrested Monday in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl. Alvaro Francisco Holguin Duarte , age 23 was taken in for questioning by police. He was later arrested and charged with child abuse.

The charges include: one count child abuse and one count 2nd degree murder. Duarte may face other charges, pending the outcome of the Medical Examiner's report, police said.

According to police, Duarte is in the US illegally.

Avondale police are waiting for a coroner's report into the cause of death of the 3-year-old girl.

Around 9:30 a.m. on November 17, Avondale paramedics responded to an apartment complex near Van Buren Street and Litchfield Road to a call of a child not breathing.

Alisandra Oliviana Romero, 3, who was the daughter of Duarte's girlfriend, was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead around 10:15 a.m., according to police.

Reportedly, the child had multiple bruises on her body.

Around 9:30 a.m., police responded to an emergency call from a maintenance worker at an apartment complex on the 300 block of East Van Buren Street. The girl's mother had left for work, leaving Alisandra in the care of the mother's boyfriend, Alvaro Francisco Holguin Duarte

When Alisandra stopped breathing, Duarte ran out into the apartment complex's courtyard because he did not have a phone and asked the worker to call 911, police said.

He sure looks like a Meth head to me, Here is the part that upsets me the most, there were 5 other children in the apartment, so it was 6 children he was left with. ( some one mention she had 7 children?? it sounds like 2 sets of twins and 2 or 3 other ones. The 3 year old girl who died was the older set of twins. )

At least five other children living in the apartment were placed into Child Protective Services custody.

He was not the biological father of the three year old twin girls. He is the father of the other children. He had moved out of state and upon his return, the mother and him decided to give their relationship a second chance. After several months of things going well, getting to know not only his kids again but the 3 year old twins, Mom thought that things were fine decided to let him move back in. He had been living with mom and the kids for only 2 months.

I personally know this mother and her 7 children. This Mother had to WORK to support her children, and that is where she was when this horrible crime occured. she had a 4 bedroom apartment which is plenty of room for her and her 7 Children!!!!!!

How terrible. You know the mother was damn busy trying to make a living for all those children.
And it would be the bastard she lets back in her life that takes the life of one of her babies....so sad.

I am still haveing some issues about the mom, I am pretty sure she is a good hard working mother and treats her children well. But a single mom with 7 children? And she chooses to get back togeather with a man who is in this country illegally, has no job, probly very little education and no prospects , except for minnimum wage jobs. And then leaves him all alone with 7 children, who seem to be mostly toddlers.

Thats kind of a recipie for disaster in the making, She has to work her ass off inorder to pay for everything, so that would make her gone from the house too many hours a day. And other people end up raiseing your children.

I was raised in a big family, I hardley ever saw my father and he worked 3 jobs to pay for everything. If you want that many kids then find a mate who can afford it or stay home till they are older. For fucks sake how many kids are you going to have, if you cant even be there for them. There wasnt even a phone in the house, he had to leave all thoughs kids alone with the dieing girl to find a phone. Maybe she could have been saved if aid got there quicker. All I am saying is I dont find the choices the mother made to be very good ones and more like real bad ones.

An Avondale man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the 2008 killing of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter.

Alvaro Holguin-Duarte was charged with murder and two counts of child abuse in the death of Alisandra Romero. The child abuse charges were dropped as part of Wednesday's plea deal, which removed the possibility of a death sentence for the 25-year-old.

He told police he had slapped the girl after she soiled her pants but Alisandra's 11-year-old brother told officers that he saw Duarte stomp on the girl's chest.

Holguin-Duarte will be sentenced in March.

An Avondale man has been sentenced to natural life in prison for the 2008 murder of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 25-year-old Alvaro Holguin Duarte was sentenced Wednesday.
