Default Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

They say this is going to be a cult hit. I wanted to see it, but it's in very limited release.

Is it just me or is Paris Hilton really...unattractive? I really don't understand her. She clearly needs a boob job and a new nose. A new set of vocal cords would be a dashing new feature as well. Aside from that, I've yet to see a song I enjoyed...

I believe (even although I have yet to see it) that this film would be much better set in a modern city rather than a dystopia, with no music. It would be a decent horror then.

Really, I wanted to see it because I'm a Sarah Brightman fan and I liked Anthony Head on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Paris Hilton, whatever. Although I hear she actually doesn't suck.

Release Date: November 7, 2008
Studio: Lionsgate
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
Screenwriter: Darren Smith, Terrance Zdunich
Starring: Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Bill Moseley, Paris Hilton, Kevin Graham Ogilvie, Anthony Stewart Head, Sarah Brightman
Genre: Horror, Musical
MPAA Rating: R (for strong bloody violence and gore, language, some drug and sexual content)
Official Website: Repoopera.com
Plot Summary: In the year 2056 – the not so distant future – an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants… for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men. In a world where surgery addicts are hooked on painkilling drugs and murder is sanctioned by law, a sheltered young girl searches for the cure to her own rare disease as well as information about her family's mysterious history. After being sucked into the haunting world of GeneCo, she is unable to turn back, as all of her questions will be answered at the wildly anticipated spectacular event: The Genetic Opera.

The movie looks phenominal. I absolutely love movies that dare to be different... Repo! The Genetic Opera looks brilliant on just about every level. I too would love to see this one up on the big screen, but it'll never come anyplace near me. Hopefully it comes out quickly on DVD. (March maybe?) To me... this looks like a much better version of Sweeny Todd (IE: No Tim Burton!)

Ooo yea.. it fucking has Bill Moseley in it! What more could you want?

Really... if you take away the music, and the "set in the future" plot, you've just raped the movie of all its originality.

Nah. Collecting organs from people would make a decent thriller, that, if in the right hands (cough, not these people, cough) could be an amazing movie. Musical horrors are always comical at best.

If the movie was simply about a killer who collected peoples organs they might as well change the title to "Repo! The Generic Horror Film" Look, I understand that these musical-type movies are not everyone's cup of tea and that's fine... but you can't honestly think this movie would be better off without the ONE thing that makes it different.

The reason why movies like "Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" are "comical at best" is because Tim Burton couldn't direct his way out of a paper bag and has to rely on poor Johnny Depp to get any substance out of his films.

This movie is in much better hands and has a much better cast.

Are you implying that Darren Bousman, who directed those three travesties we call Saw films, is a better director than Tim Burton? If anything this is in worst hands...

I do like Tim Burton. Demon Barber wasn't his best work. I watched the first Saw and liked it, but I haven't seen any of the sequels.

You guys should see Rocky Horror Picture show. THE best show of all time if I do say so myself... (and I do) it's a classic that even youngers can enjoy.

Tim Burton is an overrated pile of crap. Darren Bousman wins by default. I mean honestly... just look at this guy, if you seen him walking down the street you'd think he was a child molester:

And that, my friends, is my Tim Burton rant for the evening.

Well, fortunately for Mr. Burton, no one cares what directors look like. To my knowledge (I am not a film major though so I could be incorrect), directors sit behind the camera rather than in front of it. This results in no one caring about what directors look like.

I do know he is overrated. However, Bousman has nothing under his belt that's even remotely decent. Burton has films like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Big Fish. Saw II-IV would make any sane human being implode if they were forced to watch them. Fortunately I am insane, so I did not implode.

Until Bousman actually makes a film that does not make its viewer's eyes bleed, I don't believe you really have grounds to argue with.

I don't even like the latter Saw Movies... yet I still think those show more originality than Burtons last five films, combined.

Lets see we have Sweeney Todd in which Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter sing and have funky hairdos. Before that there was The Corpse Bride in which... Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter sing and have funky hairdos in stop motion! Then there was Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in which... well I'll be damned Johnny Depp and Helena Boham Carter star, do you think there will be singing? Before that there was Big Fish ... I'll give Burton credit where credit is due, this movie was actually fairly good. Then we've got Planet of the Apes ... which was saved by Paul Giamatti and Tim Roth, who do there best to work with a script that was questionable at best. The less said about Sleepy Hollow the better (and guess who it starts, its good to know Depp will have employment for the rest of his life as long as Burton is directing). And before all of those he did Mars Attacks! (sub plot involving Slim Whitman), Ed Wood, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, and finally... his best work, Beetle Juice

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion and MINE is that Tim Burton sucks and I'd rather have the guy who made a bunch of sub-par Saw Films than him.

Back on topic, Repo! The Genetic Opera is in capable hands. Darren Lynn Bousman is a relative new comer who is at least trying to make a different type of film. Tim Burton on the other hand is off working on Frankenweenie which'll probably star Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

So Kyle, Just say you don't like the guys work and walk away. Over rated?
I think Woody Allen is over rated... Well not really I guess I just don't care for his films!
Even though lots more people do! I figure the same is said with Tim Burton!
I'll bet alot more people like his films than don't like his films!

Bla Bla Bla... whatever! PEACE!

I think Woody Allen is over rated... Well not really I guess I just don't care for his films!
Even though lots more people do! I figure the same is said with Tim Burton!
I'll bet alot more people like his films than don't like his films!

Bla Bla Bla... whatever! PEACE!
Woody Allen is overrated. He has a handful of decent films and the rest are yawn-worthy.

I'm just saying, Bousman hasn't done ANYTHING remotely decent in his entire career. To say he's better than Burton is puzzling at best. And to say this film would be generic without the musical feel is also puzzling...I have seen quite a fair bit of films in my life, but repossessing organs from recipients is relatively new to me regardless if it's a musical or not. Hardly generic.

Holy Shit!!! I just watched this today... TWICE!
It's awsome and I liked it better than Sweeny Todd!

I don't even know where to start.
Everything about this is great!
Cult hit my ass, this shit is classic!
I loved when Joan Jett just appeared!

I am going to watch this again then maybe I'll know better how to explain it!

If you haven't seen it, DO!

[QUOTE=brokenandtwisted;88933]Is it just me or is Paris Hilton really...unattractive? I really don't understand her. She clearly needs a boob job and a new nose. A new set of vocal cords

PH has promoted herself as an actress, singer, porn star, model etc.etc. If she had no money, she would be working in the warehouse on graveyard shift.

I love this fucking movie. It's a lot of fun, and has some really catchy songs. And Paris Hilton isn't half bad in it, oddly enough. Darren Lynn Bousman is a stylish director, he reminds me of Dario Argento at various points during his movies. Heck, one of the best kills in Saw 2 is pretty much directly lifted from Argento's "Opera". The scene in question in "Opera" is one of the most stylish over the top sick jokes in horror film history. Just jaw dropping in it's audacity and (pardon the pun) execution.

Back to Repo, my sis saw the lead actress in "The Crucible" on Broadway.

My DVDs.
