It's been a couple years since I've transcribed psych reports so much. Normally I love them--lots of narrative (which is good for me, since the narrative is the kind that I like and it keeps me focused, AND it's the best money maker--this job is paid on production rather than time). They're really interesting most of the time, especially on the account I'm working on, which is a HUGE mental health system that is a pretty major and complicated center/conglomerate, and it's governmental, so that means they get ALL the juicy cases.

However, it gets depressing sometimes, and today's one of the most depressing types of report batches--children.

I remember my first child psych report--it was on a 5-year-old who stabbed his mother and threw his baby sister down the basement stairs. That was about 10 years ago, and I was a green transcriptionist and certainly green to kids--my daughter was just a year old. I cried over that one, more and harder than I'd cried over some of the death reports I used to get upset about. :(

1 dead, 3 injured in Arizona mobile home fire A 2-year-old boy dragged a 1-year-old Arizona girl Friday from a house fire that killed her mother and injured two other adults, authorities said.

Fire crews responding to the fire in the Pinal County community of Maricopa south of Phoenix found the girl's mother, 22-year-old Michelle Mariano, lying near a doorway of the mobile home, Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Brad Pitassi said. She was identified by Sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Tamatha Villar.

Villar said officials believe the boy is the girl's brother but haven't confirmed that.

Michelle Mariano's 28-year-old sister, Marion Mariano, was also severely burned, authorities said, and she and the little girl were airlifted to Maricopa Medical Center's burn unit in Phoenix.

The little girl had facial and torso burns covering nearly 40 percent of her body and Marion Mariano had burns over 70 percent of her body and was in extremely critical condition, Villar said.
New guidelines for cervical cancer screening say women should delay their first Pap test until age 21, and be screened less often than recommended in the past.

The advice, from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is meant to decrease unnecessary testing and potentially harmful treatment, particularly in teenagers and young women. The group’s previous guidelines had recommended yearly testing for young women, starting within three years of their first sexual intercourse, but no later than age 21.

Increasingly, bioengineers are growing nerve, heart and other tissues in labs. Recently, scientists even reported developing artificial penis tissue in rabbits. Although such research is meant to help treat patients, biomedical engineer Mark Post at Maastricht University in the Netherlands and his colleagues suggest it could also help feed the rising demand for meat worldwide.

The researchers noted that growing skeletal muscle in labs - the kind people typically think of as the meat they eat - could help tackle a number of problems:

* Avoiding animal suffering by reducing the farming and killing of livestock.
* Dramatically cutting down on food-borne ailments such as mad cow disease and salmonella or germs such as swine flu, by monitoring the growth of meat in labs.
* Livestock currently take up 70 percent of all agricultural land, corresponding to 30 percent of the world's land surface, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Labs would presumably require much less space.
* Livestock generate 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than all of the vehicles on Earth, the FAO added. Since the animals themselves are mostly responsible for these gases, reducing livestock numbers could help alleviate global warming.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says some very popular children's toys have high levels of lead in them, a finding that may give shoppers pause this holiday season. California's attorney general is warning retailers that children's products with illegal lead levels should be pulled from their shelves immediately.

A new federal law limits the lead content in children's products to just 300 parts per million to lessen exposure to the potentially harmful substance.

But California Attorney General Jerry Brown found items like the Disney Fairies Water Lily Necklaces, sold by Walgreens, had more than 22,000 lead parts per million.

The Barbie Bike Flair Accessory Kit, at Tuesday Morning Stores, had nearly 7,000 parts per million, while Paula Fuchsia Shoes, at Sears, had almost 4,000.

"These things come in from China and all over the world. So it's quite a job to test it. It's my office's job that when we find out this stuff, send out the warning, protect the public," said Brown.

Parents like Donica Patchell were surprised stores didn't learn their lesson from the lead scare two years ago.

"As retailers, I would hope that they would be looking out for my children's best interest," said Patchell.

Eyewitness News visited several Capitol-area stores on Brown's list and found many products had already been taken off the shelves. But that may not be the case statewide.

Several reversible Croco belts were found at Target. The cash registers, though, wouldn't ring them up.

Target says it's looking into why the belts are still on the racks.

State Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco), who tried unsuccessfully to ban lead altogether in California, says this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

Sounds like most other religions out there. About the only thing missing is a war or two in the name of God.

Accused of torture and forced abortions
Kevin Rudd, the Australian Prime Minister, has voiced “concerns” over the Church of Scientology after a senator detailed explosive allegations about the organisation, accusing it of torture, embezzlement and coerced abortions.
Nick Xenophon tabled letters to the Australian parliament from several former Scientologists, and alleged that the secretive church was an “abusive … violent and criminal organisation” which is hiding behind religion.
Mr Xenophon was questioning the church's tax-free status as a religion when he made the claims, which have been denied by the organisation.
The letters, which the senator has passed onto police, contained allegations of a range of crimes, including forced imprisonment, coerced abortions, embezzlement of church funds, physical violence, intimidation and blackmail.

“Scientology is not a religious organisation, it is a criminal organisation that hides behind its so-called religious beliefs,” Mr Xenophon told the Australian Senate in Canberra on Tuesday evening.
“... The letters received by me which were written by former followers in Australia contains extensive allegations of crimes and abuses that are truly shocking - crimes against them and crimes they say they were coerced into committing.
“These victims of Scientology claim it is an abusive, manipulative, violent and criminal organisation, and that criminality is condoned at the highest levels.”

A drug that failed to fight the blues could be the female answer to the little blue pill Viagra, the lead North American investigator analysing tests of the drug said Tuesday.
Women who took the drug flibanserin when it was being tested as an anti-depressant said it didn't help them beat the glums, but did give them "an increase in libido that they liked," John Thorp, one of the investigators analyzing data from three clinical trials of the drug, told AFP.
Lack of desire is the most common sexual problem in women aged 30 to 60, just as erectile dysfunction, for which Viagra is one of a choice of treatments, is the most common sexual disorder among men in the same age bracket, Thorp said.
"Men remain interested but can't act or perform properly and women lose interest," said Thorp.
"So where Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications work in the blood supply, flibanserin works in the brain," he said.

The parents of a toddler who stopped breathing at Happy Feet Day Care won a settlement of more than $1 million on Monday in a Twin Falls courtroom.

Twin Falls 5th District Court Judge G. Richard Bevan handed down the settlement totaling $1,060,984.71, following tearful testimony from the parents of 15-month-old Brendan Becker, who died July 5 at a Boise hospital after he stopped breathing at Happy Feet Day Care in Twin Falls.

Becker’s mom, Shyloh Masuo, and his dad, Joshua Becker, of Kimberly, filed suit against the day care’s owners, Gloria Galan and Julio Silva, along with two unnamed employees on Aug. 11. The parents claimed the day care was reckless and breached its duty to care for their child.

The defendants, including Galan, did not respond to the lawsuit nor attend Monday’s hearing for default judgment against them. “There’s no doubt this baby was strangled by a car seat,” said the parents’ lawyer, Robyn Brody. “The court has to place a value on this family’s loss.”

Brody told the court Monday that Galan had 25 years of experience in day care settings, but placed the baby who was being “fussy” into a car seat, within in a play-pen and then left him unsupervised.

What happened to Brendan Becker’s parents is “every working parent’s nightmare,” she said.

Galan was licensed to run a day care, and the parents told the court her day care seemed safe and clean. Brendan stopped breathing on only his second visit to Happy Feet on July 3, Masuo testified.

“It looked really good,” said Masuo of Happy Feet. “It was clean … It looked very structured.”

After moving to Twin Falls from Oregon, Masuo testified that she interviewed Galan before sending her three children to Happy Feet. Masuo said she learned about the day care business from the Idaho State Training and Registry System, which assists parents with child care referrals and resources.

Galan allegedly told Masuo that her son stopped breathing after a shirt wrapped around his neck. Then to police, Galan allegedly said the baby stopped breathing in the car seat. Police also interviewed the parents about the death, according to testimony.

“She won’t say anything,” said Masuo about information Galan provided to her.

Becker’s father broke down from the stand while recounting his pleas to Galan for information about what happened to his boy.

“She just kept telling me he was being fussy,” said Joshua Becker. “I said, ‘No, I want to know what happened to my son.’”

But Galan left the parents with their questions unanswered. “She (Galan) wouldn’t tell me,” said Becker.
JUPITER — An overgrown lawn could cost a homeowner $1,000 a day.
A plan to quadruple the penalty from the current maximum of $250 per day for a first violation is scheduled for consideration at Tuesday night's town council meeting.
A repeat violation by the same person would be boosted to $5,000 a day maximum from $500 per day.
If the code enforcement board finds that the violation is irreversible — the unapproved removal of an historic tree, for example — the violator would face a maximum fine of $15,000. The current maximum penalty is $5,000.
"That's outrageous," said Stefan Harzen, a member of the property owners association for the Woodland Estates neighborhood. Increasing the fines will not result in prettier neighborhoods, he said. "This is an easy way for the town to get more money," Harzen said.
Higher penalties are needed to deter flagrant violators, said Councilman Robert Friedman. A landlord who allows too many people to live in a house simply sees the current fine as a cost of doing business, he said.
"Code enforcement needs a larger hammer," Friedman said.
Last year Jupiter's seven-person Code Enforcement Division collected about $39,000 in fines, according to town records.

I believe that today, after reading how baby Shaniya Davis was found deceased, has really hit some of us pretty hard. Some have been scarred by other stories and don't seem to have a way to vent. I thought that maybe I would create a thread where we can post either our anger, fears, pain, etc.

I don't really have anyone to vent this type of pain to, other than with other members here. We all have a reason why we keep coming back here and read these stories. It may be a childhood abuse, domestic, or someone in our family was a victim of crime. It doesn't mater what it may be, we all have one or two stories that stay and wreck with our brains. Mine have been many, today it's Shaniya Davies.

I know I have said this many times before in countless threads, but here goes again. I am a mother of 4 children, that I would gladly lay my life on the line to make sure they are safe. When I read about children being abducted, beaten, tortured, and finally murdered, I am left with an empty feeling inside, and I don't even know the child. But when I realize that the child met their demise at the hands of their protector, I am left with more questions that I care to admit to. What kind of a person does it take to look your own child in their eyes, all the while knowing what you are about to do? How does one go from carrying a life inside them, to killing the child after having endured the 9 month of pregnancy?

I have read so many stories of abuse, neglect and murder, but as soon as I saw little Shaiya's sweet smiling face, I feel in love with her. I prayed, I cried, I begged God to spare her. To let her be found alive. Then came the video, and my heart sank. Her face as she waited for the elevator. She was just a baby, a baby that still needed guidance, nurturing, and protection. She needed someone that would love her, fight for her, and make sure she grew up to be the lovely young lady she was destined to be. Instead, she was fed to the lions. She was not thought of as a life, a person, she was an object.

For now all I can say is that Shaniya, you are with the angels now Sweet Baby Girl...No one can harm you now, you are free..:crying:

Heather Ellis, a young black school teacher from Missouri, is currently on trial and facing up to 15 years in prison over allegations that she resisted arrest, disturbed the peace, and assaulted police officers during her 2007 Wal-Mart arrest.

According to witnesses, Ellis and her cousin were in different checkout lines on January 6, 2007 when Ellis noticed that her cousin's lane was moving faster than hers. Ellis then apparently proceeded to grab her items, walk over to the lane that her cousin was in, shove the items being purchased by the next customer in line back on the conveyor belt, and place her items on it so she would be next. The person who was next in line didn't think Ms. Ellis was all that, apparently, and bitched....setting off a firestorm. Ellis claims that the pesky white woman pushed her, but witnesses say that never happened.

She claimed in a written complaint to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that she was then pushed by a white customer, hassled by store employees, called racial slurs and physically mistreated by Kennett police officers.

Police say in court documents that Ellis refused requests to calm down and leave the property, allegedly kicking one's shin and splitting another's lip while resisting arrest.

Witnesses instead told police that Ellis shoved the woman's merchandise back, according to court filings.

Ellis wrote that a security officer and manager were called over and that although Ellis said she wanted to pay, the manager yelled at her to leave the store. Police were called and arrived.

Officers eventually followed her to the parking lot, she said, using racial slurs and telling her to go back to the ghetto. As her aunt and uncle drove into the parking lot, Ellis said, the officers "jumped" on her even though she said she was not resisting.

Officer A.W. Fisher wrote in a probable cause statement that Ellis was given "every opportunity" to comply with officers and leave the property. He said she used an expletive in telling him she would beat him if he put his hands on her.

Fisher said he then told Ellis she was under arrest, but she would not stop fighting while being handcuffed.

Following her arrest, Ellis alleged, she was thrown against doors on the way into jail and an officer later twisted her shirt with his knuckle to choke her while she was in custody.
Animal cruelty charges have been filed against a local man who had an apparently malnourished and emaciated dog in deplorable living conditions, police said on Friday.

Police charged Anthony Crawford, 34, of 319 SW 11th Ave., with felony cruelty to animals. He was in the Palm Beach County Jail late Friday. Bail was set at $30,000.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers responded to Crawford's home to arrest him on charges of cocaine possession and saw the pit bull in the laundry room.

"The dog was so weak that it could barely stand up," Sgt. Michael Moschette said. "I was torn apart."

The dog's condition was so bad that the outline of its ribs, pelvis and spine were easily seen beneath its skin, the affidavit said.

"His rib bones and spine were clearly visible [protruding]," Moschette said.

The dog reportedly had no food and a bucket "with stagnant water that was yellowish brown in color and totally undrinkable," Moschette said.

In Serbia, garlic has long been regarded as a good luck charm and a guard against many ailments. As far as the public is concerned, that includes the swine flu pandemic, which recently has spread in Serbia and triggered near panic among the local population.

That is now evident in Belgrade's produce markets, where the price of garlic has shot up, thanks to a sudden increase in demand. The smell of the little white cloves also has become prevalent in public places as people munch on them as if eating apples.

Health officials have publicly urged the population not to take garlic's healing properties so seriously. Instead, they recommend opting for more conventional precautions, such as washing hands, wearing face masks, or eventually getting vaccinated.

But those calls seem to have been in vain.

"Garlic is the best, forget the vaccines," said Marko Jankovic, an elderly Belgrader, with the pungent smell of garlic obvious as he spoke at the crowded Kaleniceva Pijaca market. "From the vaccine, you can get sick. From garlic, you can only get bad breath."

[...]

In many parts of the world, the distinct taste and smell of garlic are considered essential in many meals. But in Serbia — as elsewhere in the Balkans — many people consider it more important than that.

Garlic is kept on doorsteps or in pockets to keep vampires away, and under babies' pillows to ensure a healthy and prosperous life. Serbs often consume garlic as a snack together with slivovitz, a strong plum brandy.

These days, Serbian media often compare what happened at two popular music festivals as proof of the alleged medicinal virtues of garlic.

That's because Serbia's first swine flu cases were confirmed after the annual Exit rock music festival in July in the town of Novi Sad, where authorities say the mostly young audience indulged in beer and marijuana.

By contrast, the media say, no swine flu cases resulted from the equally popular folk music festival in Guca, central Serbia, where the generally older, more tradition audience gorged on meat dishes heavily spiced with garlic, and drank slivovitz.

[...]
"People must take this pandemic more seriously and focus on real prevention and medicine," not garlic, said Zoran Djordjevic, a virology doctor at a Belgrade hospital.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33911735...-cold_and_flu/

So, if nobody gets the piggy flu at a public orgy, then will the entire country turn into a scene from Caligula?
