Police arrested a man Friday they say robbed a bank and then had a dye pack explode on him while using a bus to escape.

A tip led police to a room at the Landmark Motel. Police said they knocked on the door, and Thomas John Castro, 54, answered with a bag of crack cocaine.
[...]

Police say Castro is the man who entered a Wachovia branch and gave a teller a threatening note asking for money. That man was wearing a disguise.

The robber then attempted to escape on a public bus, police say. That's when a red dye pack hidden with the stolen money exploded, which police say is very loud and noticeable. He then exited the bus and was last seen fleeing on foot.

Castro's arrest record is 16 pages long and shows past arrests for trespassing, burglary and grand theft.

It is unknown whether Castro was covered in red dye at the time of his arrest.

According to an arrest report, Karolyn Gail Minor, 28, left her 7-year-old and 18-month-old children at home alone about 10 hours — from about midnight Wednesday to about 10 a.m. Thursday — while she went out. She went first to a bar and later to spend the night at the home of a friend whose name she “could not or would not give” to an officer, the report stated.

A neighbor told police she saw the 7-year-old waving from the Minor home about 8 a.m. Thursday and then alone in the home’s driveway about 25 minutes later.

The boy told the neighbor his mother had been “kidnapped,” and the neighbor called Minor’s brother, who came to the scene and called police, the report stated.

When Minor arrived about 10 a.m. Thursday, she told police she had left the children in the care of a friend, police said. But the friend told police she left Minor’s home shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Minor was still at the house. The friend’s sister confirmed the friend’s story, according to the report.

Course we wouldn't have any if that was the case
Most are out for themselves and are more than willing to sell their vote to the highest bidder. All they really care about is their political power and future. Fuck the nation, fuck the people.
My rant isn't for or against the health care bill, but what we have to pay this bitch as a nation if we're interested in it. Guess blackmail laws don't apply to politishits

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/200...ote.htmlmarrow

ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports:
What does it take to get a wavering senator to vote for health care reform?
Here’s a case study.
On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster.”
The section spends two pages defining which “states” would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that “during the preceding 7 fiscal years” have been declared a “major disaster area.”
I am told the section applies to exactly one state: Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill.
In other words, the bill spends two pages describing would could be written with a single world: Louisiana. (This may also help explain why the bill is long.)
Senator Harry Reid, who drafted the bill, cannot pass it without the support of Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu.
How much does it cost? According to the Congressional Budget Office: $100 million.
Here’s the incredibly complicated language:

IT WAS after midnight in mid-April, and Greg Harlen would not stop screaming in his room at the Cardinal Krol Center.

Harlen, 52, a resident of the Philadelphia Archdiocese-run home for mentally handicapped men, was lying in his bed, writhing in pain.

Both of his hips had been shattered.

Later that morning, staffers decided to call 9-1-1. Harlen, who had Down syndrome, was taken to Springfield Hospital - nearly 20 hours after he is believed to have suffered a mysterious trauma that broke his hips.

He died in the hospital about a month later of complications from his injuries.

"I can't imagine the pain he was in," said Harlen's sister, Sheila Phelan. "I don't understand why they didn't send him to the hospital long before they did."

Harlen's death has renewed scrutiny of the center's operations, five years after the state Health Department released a scathing report that said the 131-bed home in Delaware County had failed to protect its residents from sexual abuse by another resident - and other serious violations.

"What's happening out there?" Phelan asked. "Is this normal, that people scream?"

Archdiocese spokeswoman Donna Farrell said she couldn't comment on Harlen's case because the investigation was ongoing.

"Greg's death was a real loss and hit everyone here very hard," she said.

It remains unclear how Harlen was injured, whether he was beaten by another person or fell. He was unable to speak afterward.

Harlen's family believes that he was assaulted by a caregiver there, but police are awaiting the neuropathology results from his autopsy before deciding whether to proceed with a criminal investigation.

Philadelphia's Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services determined last month that Harlen, formerly of Northeast Philadelphia, should have been taken to the hospital sooner.

The department found that, "given the intensity and duration" of Harlen's crying on April 16 and 17 and other indications that he was in pain, "more timely action should have been taken by the agency to assess Mr. Harlen for injuries and necessary medical treatment."

Records show that the center, in Marple Township across from Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, has repeatedly been cited by the state in recent years for a range of violations, some of which are recurring.

Over the past year alone, the center's state-issued certification of compliance was temporarily revoked twice due to "serious substandard conditions" there.

"Many of them are very serious violations," said Jacqueline Beilharz, of the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania, a federally mandated nonprofit that seeks to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities.

Health Department inspectors have found that the center has failed to maintain complete medical records, properly train its staff, protect residents from physical abuse by other residents and conduct full background checks on some employees.

Kathy Perry, of the Arc of Delaware County, an advocacy group for people with disabilities, said her office has received several complaints about the center.
This is truly a sad sad story. RIP Greg no one can hurt you now.

Symphonic rock outfit WITHIN TEMPTATION will release a forthcoming live album, An Acoustic Night at the Theatre, due out December 15. The release will be available via all digital music providers, while physical copies will be available exclusively at the newly-launched Roadrunner Records web store.

In November 2008, Within Temptation embarked on a sold-out, intimate theatre tour in their native Europe, complete with seated audiences. The setup afforded the band the opportunity to rearrange several classics from its extensive catalogue to suit an acoustic performance. The album was recorded at the Muziekcentrum Frits Philips in Eindhoven, Holland on November 30 of last year. The performance was beautifully captured and demonstrates the simplified and stripped down side of the band.

Guitarist Robert Westerholt explained, “I was fascinated by the idea of giving our audience a much more individual experience by focusing on the essence of our songs and reducing the show to a minimum. At the same time the acoustic arrangements and sounds let you hear different influences in our music. For example, some Celtic elements which I think come out best when played acoustically.” Vocalist Sharon den Adel adds, “To show this other side of Within Temptation has been a dream of mine for quite some time. It was great to see that not only our existing fans but also people seeing us for the first time enjoyed it so much.”

Special guests include Life of Agony’s vocalist Keith Caputo for the single “What Have You Done.” Caputo guested on the album version, so it was only appropriate that he contributed to the live song, as well. Additionally, The Gathering’s Anneke van Giersbergen joins den Adel for a powerful partnership on “Somewhere.”

Of additional note, the album also contains the brand new song Utopia, written during the rehearsals for the theatre tour. A duet with UK singer-songwriter Chris Jones (who Sharon met while working with world-famous DJ Armin van Buuren on his track In And Out Of Love), Utopia will also be available as a digital single prior to the album release. The band are set to film a video shortly with director Oscar Verpoort. Poignantly written, Utopia is about two lovers who can't be together because they are separated by their contrasting dreams of the ideal life. "The only way to be together is for one of them to sacrifice their dream,” clarifies Sharon. “It really is about this one moment that we each inevitably experience: reaching a point in your life where you have to decide what you want your future to look like."
A woman and her 6-year-old daughter found dead in their Perris home Saturday were strangled, sheriff's officials said today.

Michael Barbar, 52, the husband and father, who was arrested Sunday in connection with the killings, is awaiting extradition from New Mexico, said homicide Sgt. Dean Spivacke of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Spivacke said investigators suspect Barbar was upset because he learned recently that he was not the child's biological father.

Deputies found Maysam Barbar, 43, and Tamara Barbar, dead about 8 a.m. Saturday in their bedrooms. The Barbars' 10-year-old daughter was found in the home, unharmed.

Spivacke said autopsies performed this week showed that both mother and daughter had been strangled and the child had "multiple areas of blunt-force trauma."

The 10-year-old discovered her little sister's body, but did not call 911, he said. Deputies went to the home, apparently hours after the killings, when another relative called asking them to check on the family.

The 10-year-old is now in the custody of relatives, Spivacke said.

The death cries of a man trapped head-first down a storm drain went ignored by his neighbours in what a coroner today described as a 'sad reflection on society'.

Mark Wells shouted and screamed 'please help me' for up to an hour in the middle of the night, but no-one came to his aid because they thought they were hearing drunken antics.

It was not until the next morning that the 32-year-old's body was found with his leg sticking out of the 2ft-by-1ft drain.

The drain had to be dismantled by firefighters as they battled to save Mr Wells

He had suffocated in the mud and slime at the bottom of the drain.

Today a coroner, recording a verdict of accidental deaths, said: 'It was a sad reflection on society that people were too scared to venture out of their homes when they heard screams.'

The coroner had heard that Mr Wells had been on a night out with friends to celebrate his 32nd birthday and accidentally dropped his keys through the bars of the storm drain as he approached his rented flat.

A friend living nearby had a spare set of keys but 'kind and considerate' aircraft fitter Mark, who lived alone, decided not to wake him but instead clambered into the narrow drain.

Residents were awoken by the music fan's screams but ignored him.

Early-riser pensioner Brian Gray later discovered the body when he walked down the footpath close to Robin Hood Street in Newport, Isle of Wight.

However, upside-down Mr Wells had already died after a night out drinking with pals and was by that time up to his waist in muddy water.

His body was so firmly wedged in the narrow drain that firefighters had to remove the pavement and the drain to pull him free following the tragedy.

Elderly Mr Gray told the inquest in Newport today that it was his dog Bugsy that discovered the body.

'When I got to the drain there I see something sticking out and I did not know what it was,' he said.

'As I got closer all I could see was a pair of ankles and a pair of shoes.'
The pensioner dashed to nearby homes and raised the alarm but nothing could be done to save Mr Wells who was pronounced dead at the scene in the early hours of his birthday on August 2.

Nearby residents Richard Reed and Stephen Gulliver, and passer-by Kim Cottingham, all heard the dying man's screams but took no action - assuming it was drunken pranksters.

Richard Reed, who was staying with friend Mr Gulliver, said in a statement read to Isle of Wight Coroner John Matthews that he heard Mr Wells calling frantically.

'At approximately 1.30am I got up to go to the toilet and heard a voice (outside) shouting "Help me, help me please",' he said.

'It seemed like a pleading voice and I thought it was drunk people. I heard the voice shouting "Help me, help me please" so I went and knocked on Mr Gulliver's bedroom door.

'He said it was probably drunks and I ignored it.' Mr Reed drifted back off to sleep as Mr Wells suffocated.

Passer-by Kim Cottingham ignored the noise when a cat walked out in front of her and assumed it had been that squealing.

The accident happened just 30 feet from Mark's front door. His black Nokia phone and wallet were later recovered from the drain.

The unmarried man had decided to leave his friends early and go home to bed because he was due to meet his father Kevin the next day.

A post mortem examination revealed Mr Wells died from postural asphyxia. He was just over twice the drink drive limit.

'Mark was walking down the alleyway, no doubt with the keys in his hand and he dropped them down the drain,' he said.

'Remembering it was the early hours of the morning, and his reasoning powers were affected, he can either stay out all night until it becomes light, he can go and wake up his friend or he can open up the drain cover and try to retrieve his keys - not having any idea of the depth.

'Unfortunately he takes this latter course.'

Mr Matthews added he did not blame local residents for ignoring the cry for help.

'Nobody went to his rescue and the reasons are several. Being the Isle of Wight there are places on Friday and Saturday nights where it is not safe for people to be out because of the fear of drunk or drugged persons and perhaps the fear of assault.

'I can well understand why people did not do anything that night.'

He continued: 'It is a sad reflection on the state of things in our life today where it is not safe for some people to go out at night even in the Isle of Wight.'
Robert Vezendy, a partially paralyzed man who admitted to secretly recording young girls in the bathroom of his Satsuma home, received the most lenient sentence allowed by law, after the judge heard about his difficult experiences in prison while undergoing psychological evaluation.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade in Mobile ordered the 44-year-old Vezendy to serve five years for possession of child pornography. Upon release, he will have to register as a sex offender and be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for the rest of his life.

Granade said that the sentence took into account Vezendy's physical disability while still providing an adequate punishment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Costello objected since the sentence was less than half the term that Vezendy faced under the advisory guidelines.

Defense lawyer Dennis Knizley said he was grateful but added that Vezendy could still appeal on grounds that prison confinement would amount to "cruel and unusual punishment" for someone in his condition.

Vezendy was a teenager in New York state when injuries in a traffic accident left him without feeling below the waist. He has limited use of his arms and hands.

He admitted last year that he set up a hidden camera in his bathroom and made videos of girls from his neighborhood as they showered, used his toilet and danced in front of the mirror.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents found 47 videos of four girls ranging in age from 6 to 13 that had been taken between July 2005 and the end of 2007.

Also, Vezendy had thousands of images of child pornography on his computers.

A man who gouged out a woman's eye and threw it from an eighth-floor balcony has been jailed for attempted murder.
Francis Murphy, 26, was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh of using a metal coat hanger to prise out the eye of 27-year-old Natalie Farrell in May.
Judge John Morris QC told Murphy his crime was almost "medieval" in its barbarity and would make a right-thinking person "recoil in horror".
Murphy, from Dundee, was jailed for 12 years.
During the trial, Ms Farrell described the attack at her home in Dundee's Dalfield Court on 26 May this year.
She said she had ended her 10-year relationship with Murphy and had started a new partnership with another man.
However, Murphy turned up at her home, attacked her new partner, then grabbed her and said he was going to take out her eye with a metal hook.
She described how he tried at get his thumb and two fingers into her eye and pull it out.
She said she passed out when Murphy began throttling her.

You were convicted of crimes which are almost medieval in their barbarity, which would make any right-thinking person recoil in horror
Judge John Morris QC
When Ms Farrell regained consciousness her eye was on her cheek hanging by the optic nerve.
Murphy then grabbed it and threw it over an eighth-floor balcony.
Ms Farrell said she only learned that her eye had been pulled out when a friend found it and gave it to paramedics.
Her neighbour, Noel Pittham, told the court that he watched Murphy try to force Ms Farrell over the balcony as he attacked her.
The court also heard from Ms Farrell's friend, Jade Hall, 24, who recounted hitting Murphy with a brush to try to stop him from attacking her friend.
Artificial eye
She said that it was only when she descended the stairs of the block of flats that she and another man found Ms Farrell's eye lying in the street.
Murphy had claimed to police that he could remember nothing of the attack.
Solicitor advocate Iain Paterson, defending, blamed his client's actions on a combination of "tangled emotions", drink and drugs - and said Murphy was struggling to come to terms with what had happened.
"He is going to have to sit in a prison cell for a number of years and take stock of what he has done," said Mr Paterson.
Sentencing Murphy to 12 years, judge John Morris QC told him: "You were convicted of crimes which are almost medieval in their barbarity, which would make any right-thinking person recoil in horror."
Medics are still working with Ms Farrell, who was not in court to hear the sentence, to assess whether she can be given an artificial eye.
