A Killer Query Letter

Rate this Entry
In case you didn't know (and three weeks ago, I didn't) a Query Letter is what you send an agent or a publisher so they can send you a rejection letter in return. Isn't that neat?

After writing dozens, sending a few out, and getting some rejection letters, I wondered: What would be the perfect query letter?

Just so you understand the formatting here, most query letters start with a hook, an explanation of what you wrote and how many words are in the manuscript, why you're querying this particular agent, who the fuck you are, and how they can reach you for rejection.

Without further ado... THE KILLER QUERY LETTER.

    Dear Nosi O.P.,

I thank you for your interest. I am flattered that you would consider myself to be one of the top ten literary agents in New York City.

Your experience with rare toxins is quite impressive, as I am sure my ninja editing team and my ability to have books published and become best seller are to you.

At your earliest convenience please forward your manuscript to me, together with a synopsis and an outline. Together with this, please also enclose a sample of the rare toxins and usage directions.

I look forward to working with you.

    Regards,
    Super Agent

Are there publishing houses that you would or wouldn't work with? Agents?

I have a cousin (that I have not spoken to in a very long time) who used to work at Penguin. Shall I try calling her and ask if she knows anyone who would be willing to read the manuscript?Would that help you or are you already on top of this?

From what I understand, you used to be in NYC so I am not sure if you already have contacts in the publishing industry.

Umm, forgot to add that said cousin may currently be in rehab; but I can still try.

If I forward this to 5 friends and they don't forward again, will they all die? Is Lizard's puppy but the beginning of the carnage?
