1st Year With Nicolas

My 2nd born came into the world, Aug. 23, 2007. Little did I know that he would teach me a lesson I had forgotten on many occasions.

When I first held Nicolas he was so calm, so interested in everything around him. Everyone noticed how alert and calm he was. I looked at him and just was in awe of such a beautiful baby that I carried inside of me for 9 months...surely this baby in all his splendor rubbed off on me...I'd like to think so. Nicolas came to us as a miracle. With out going into all the details let me just say at one point very early in my pregnancy we could have lost him.

Nicolas has been remarkable from the beginning. Patiently waiting as I had to make him wait sometimes as I attended to his brother's needs...yes, he was crying but a cry that was almost saying to me, "I'll wait mama, just letting you know I need you". His smile always reassures me I'm doing something right...

The months following Nicolas' birth were very difficult. My first born was having a terrible time of it. Meaning, he didn't like that mama brought home baby Nicolas to stay as a permanent fixture in our family.

Eventually things became easier and the boys grew ever closer. Nicolas was in awe of his big brother following his every move with his eyes. Now the little bugger crawls so fast it's almost a blur as Nicolas chases after his brother. Nicolas is taking his time with major milestones except for talking. It is so different that my 2nd would speak early. Everyone said your second does but I'm telling you he surprised even his doctor.
Nicolas' first word came at 7 1/2 months. Of all things it was "thee", (three). It seems he followed the sequence of numbers when one day I was dressing him and counting at the same time and said, 1-2...then Nico said "thee". I was amazed and couldn't believe my ears. I repeated the sequence and sure enough he did it again. Now at 13 months Nicolas is learning 1-2-3 in Spanish.

Nicolas is a sweet, smiley baby. He loves to give "beso's" (kisses) and snuggles to your chest because he loves to hug. He is also feisty and has a bit of temper that reminds me of his brother. But then he is from me and my husband so I figured he would have the "spice" of life too, he, he...that he has!

I can't wait to see how he unfolds as a person. Everyday I get a glimpse of what is coming. His strengths, his sweetness and yes his not so pleasant characteristics...but of course he's perfect to me.

Oh, and the lesson learned. Simple, yet so many times I forget...to smile because it feels good and life is wonderful. After all he is a miracle of life..

Thank you Nicolas for giving me that...you are my little sunshine...my light of day.

You surely have a gift in writing. When you write about your baby, I feel the emotion in your words. A baby is a gift, no matter how he arrives. My youngets Joey, is my angel baby. Had I not been pregnant with him, I wouldn't be here today. He arrived after 8 years from my last pregnancy. He showed up just in time. They day he was born, he was placed next to me on my hospital bed, and that is the same spot he remained for such a long time. The nurses would come in to my room, and just make comments about Romeo (my baby), and Juliette (me). We had a love affair going on. I had a c-section, so I was in pain but I didn't care, I had my angel baby.

Thank you fro bringing that feeling back.
