Ode to Ponchos

Rate this Entry
About me: I haven't really been into dressing like an adult until quite recently. When I first came to the company I currently work for, I enjoyed House status - that is to say, my skills were valued to the point that I wasn't being forced to abide by the dress code, so my standard uniform consisted of sweatshirts and skate shoes. A portion of this was due to my awesome boss who shielded me from HR bullshit. Unfortunately, he has since left the company and, when he did, HR started leaning on me pretty hard.

So I've met them half-way. I still wear jeans to work most days, but I also wear blouses and boots or heels. On Fridays, though, I probably push the "casual Friday" envelope. I'm a big fan of comfortable clothing, and I'll still rock those sweatshirts and skate shoes.

Because I am always looking to attain that style/comfort balance, I've grown particularly fond of ponchos. In fact, I own three. One is for the summertime - while and loosely knitted for a net-like "sheer" look, it allows me to sport spaghetti-strapped tanks to work without being inappropriate. The other two are fall/winter ponchos, heavily-knitted with collars that kind of bunch up. Paired with a nice broach or long necklace, they're pretty stylish...but they're also the most comfortable thing in creation. Think about it! It's like taking a pair of scissors and cutting a hole in the middle of your favorite throw blanket so you can fit it around your head. Even better, my weight can fluctuate all it wants and the poncho will always fit.

So, here's to you, poncho - for allowing me to look office-friendly while feeling like I'm mobbin' around in a bathrobe or some shit. When you go out of style, you'll be hard to give up.

Ponchos...gotta love them. I've only got one though. It's a purple knock out that my mother crocheted for me when I was a teenager......yeah I still wear it. 70's item, hot now 30 yrs later....go figure! I had another one, but lost it on a weekend music festival excursion years ago. Damn, I need a tie-dyed one.

btw sister, loved reading that....some things are just too wonderful to ever go out of style.

    Peace~

I love ponchos too! There are alot of really nice ones out right now, I wear them instead of a jacket in cooler weather here. So much more feminine than a windbreaker.

I need to buy more. Thanks for reminding me. :p

Yeah, they're awesome for not-quite-heavy-jacket weather. Unless it's windy. It can be kind of uncomfortable when you're trying to hold the damn thing down. :p

Seriously, my husband and I do that...we cut a hole in the middle of cozy blankets to make ponchos. It's our outside smoking attire for the winter months. We're the epitome of white trash and we're not ashamed.

I love ponchos. My grandma used to crochet ponchos, knit caps and sweater vests. Darn, I wish I had kept those. They were groovy. *sniff* I miss the good old days.

    Now I feel old.
Back in the 70's I had a knit one and a fluffy-ish looking fur one. Both had tassled fringe all around. I had to be around 7 or 8.
My sister and I would wait for the bus, spinning in our ponchos watching them flare out like dancing skirt.
Of course with that much spinning, we were bound to collide with one another and break into a fight.

    Yep. Ponchos.

Prettyuglyish, you're my hero. Sadly, it rains too much here for me to pull that off. The overhangs on our house aren't wide enough to shelter us. If that ever changes, I've got a green microfiber throw that I'll be eyeballing...
