Ode to Ponchos

About me: I haven't really been into dressing like an adult until quite recently. When I first came to the company I currently work for, I enjoyed House status - that is to say, my skills were valued to the point that I wasn't being forced to abide by the dress code, so my standard uniform consisted of sweatshirts and skate shoes. A portion of this was due to my awesome boss who shielded me from HR bullshit. Unfortunately, he has since left the company and, when he did, HR started leaning on me pretty hard.
So I've met them half-way. I still wear jeans to work most days, but I also wear blouses and boots or heels. On Fridays, though, I probably push the "casual Friday" envelope. I'm a big fan of comfortable clothing, and I'll still rock those sweatshirts and skate shoes.
Because I am always looking to attain that style/comfort balance, I've grown particularly fond of ponchos. In fact, I own three. One is for the summertime - while and loosely knitted for a net-like "sheer" look, it allows me to sport spaghetti-strapped tanks to work without being inappropriate. The other two are fall/winter ponchos, heavily-knitted with collars that kind of bunch up. Paired with a nice broach or long necklace, they're pretty stylish...but they're also the most comfortable thing in creation. Think about it! It's like taking a pair of scissors and cutting a hole in the middle of your favorite throw blanket so you can fit it around your head. Even better, my weight can fluctuate all it wants and the poncho will always fit.
So, here's to you, poncho - for allowing me to look office-friendly while feeling like I'm mobbin' around in a bathrobe or some shit. When you go out of style, you'll be hard to give up.
