So my mom calls me Saturday morning with terrible news. My sister's husband's 8 year old niece, Allison, has died in her sleep. Her parents are being investigated. The three surviving children have been temporarily placed with Andrew's brother's family. My sis and Andrew are attempting to get custody. They had a court mandated counseling session Monday, a home visit yesterday, and Andrew is in court for the custody hearing right now.

I don't have any further details. I don't know if it's just a standard investigation, or if foul play was suspected. All my sister will say is that the parents, Sarah and Steve, weren't druggies (Andrew has 8 brothers and sisters, a few of them are really bad apples) but they kept their house in really bad condition. Like REALLY bad, apparently.

I tried to Google for some news story or more info, but I don't know their last name (Andrew's family name is Smith, I dunno his sister's husband's last name) or which city they live in (might be Norwalk, but again, not sure).

I'm crossing my fingers and praying they are awarded custody. This is just such a fucked up horrific thing to have happened. I only met the kid one time, 5 years ago, she was the flower girl in my sister's wedding. But what a complete and total tragedy. I'm hoping so hard that that's all it is.

    Good news, they were granted custody. They could have the kids anywhere from a month to a year. I found some further details on the parents and what city they're in, but as of yet this isn't anything newsworthy.

    No news is good news, right?

    I know, it's my sister's husband's family. They're like fucking rabbits, and he's the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters. All of them (except him and my sis) have between 3 and 5 kids each. Yay, Mormons! -_-

    I'm heading over to my sister's this weekend to help out with some cooking and errands and whatever else I can do to ease the load of suddenly parenting 3 fucking kids. I hope to get the full scoop then.

    Funeral was Saturday. According to my sister, the autopsy found no trauma, and cause of death was officially unknown. Parents aren't in custody. No other word on the status of the investigation, but it's looking like the most they're guilty of is being really shitty housekeepers and poor white trash in general. I hope those kids stay with my sister long enough for the parents to clean up their act.
