MMORPG HELL

Ok, here's the deal. I used to play MMORPGs. Started with the original Everquest, then to Asheron's Call and then lastly Guild Wars. I had waited for World of Warcraft, and hyped a friend of mine on it so bad that she bought it on the day of release. I did not. After starting D'D, I found I just didn't have the time required to play these games any longer. Five years later, she is still playing WoW...but has been trying to get me to play a new MMORPG on the scene, a game called Aion.
Over the weekend, I was kinda bored and decided that if Aion had a free trial, I would give it a shot. In the process, I checked out some MMORPG review sites and official forums to get a feel for some other games out there that could be played immediately, and for free (for a certain amount of time). The list was pared down to:
- Aion
- Everquest 2
- Lord of the Rings
- Dungeons and Dragons
I will not play World of Warcraft. I know it is the most popular and crowd favorite, but I HATE the way it looks. Way too cartoony for my tastes. PLUS I had one very big pre-requisite...the game MUST favor solo play for people like me who do not play well with others and do not have time to sit around waiting for groups to form. By Sunday, I had found that game.

Aion by NCSoft - This game is out. I could not use their free trial because their Paypal system was broken. But after doing some digging, the main complaints on Aion (all MMORPG's have their pros and cons, so I am not dissing the game overall) are that it is a grind-fest. That and you have to depend on groups to perform actions that do not equal what you get in return. As soon as I heard "grind" I was totally turned off. Normally the word grind does the opposite, but when talking about MMORPG's, my dick crawls in itself and forms something akin to a bellybutton.

Everquest 2 by Sony - Two week free trial with perks and a bunos if you reach level 20 within 14 days. I picked an evil character. A dark elf Shadow Knight. No idea why, just wanted to play something evil. Got him to level 13 in a day. I really liked this...plus being back in EQ lands was kinda strange. However, the game has been around for a long time. 2004 I think. The graphics were dated and when I turned them up, my system ran it like shit. Plus, there is soooooo much shit in the game from all the expansions and what-not, I felt really, really behind in the game right at the start. I did like the combat system. But it was when I was in the middle of running to some quest...a run that had taken a while to get there...another player walked over to me and killed me with two hits. I sent them a message and thanked them for reminding me why I hate these games sometimes. He\she replied "lulz".

Dungeons and Dragons Online by Turbine - This game is cool because it is completely FREE. No cash needed to play...ever. They make their money by selling points that can be used to by extra character slots, unique items, shit you cannot get in game. I had a pretty good time with a human barbarian that I took to level 13 or so. My issue with the game was the graphics were ok but not great (I am not running a monster system, btw)and I felt the combat was lacking. I did like the swimming and underwater levels and the fact that I played the entire game solo with no real problems. In fact, I am not sure I ever died at all. This ranked my second favorite game...the free aspect being a big bonus...but I can see where it also could be a negative aspect if I needed to "buy" something to get more out of the game.

Lord of the Rings by Turbine - I am not Lord of the Rings fan. Never even read the books. Just watched the movies. So I was real hesitant about even checking this out because I am not keen on the LotR universe at all. But I read that since 2007, the developers have tweaked the game to the point that no matter what class you picked, you could solo the game even in the higher levels. Some easier than others, but do-able. So I picked a Human Warden and began my 10 day trial. THIS is the game I am sticking with. The graphics are amazing, the storylines engaging, the combat fun with a strategy involved and sure enough - solo-able. That's not to mean "easy" but means that if you know your character you can take out some shit a lot higher level than you. I have died quite a few times, but only because of my own stupidity or the fact that I may have attracted more than one enemy. But still, I had a lot of fun with this game and up to this point, level 14, I have no complaints.
So, LotR it is for me for a while...at least until the trial runs out. If any of you are playing, or decide to check it out...I am on the Brandywine server. You'll know me as the Warden named Slagle usually running away from some big ass bear I accidentally pissed off.
