View Full Version : Morbid vs Swivel - Let the Bloodbath Begin

Myself and swivel were having one of our standard conversations that ranged from Microsoft Points ripping people off, to bookshelves, to me telling him about No Country for Old Men, until we got on the subject of FPS (or First Person Shooters, for the non-gaming readers)
See, me and swivel are old-school gamers. We were there, playing Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen, and Rise of the Triad when they all first came out. Action Quake, Action Half-Life, and on and on and on. Hell, the clan I helped create (RYTS) was in the top 5 clans in the Quake 2 Weapons of Destruction mod ladder. We had a clan for Interstate 76 (MAHD) and even Battelzone. But right around the time of Halo and the newer Unreal Tournament games, I, as well as swivel, stopped having fun playing them online and just eventually quit playing online.
Which brings us back to the phone call. Swivel loves reminding me of the day he (admittedly) SCHOOLED me at Doom. In particular, an incident when he killed me while I had the BFG. So, the shit talking started until we challenged each other to a re-match. But just not with Doom, but with all the old games we used to play. We have a tentative list, with the matches being a simple 2 out of 3. No practice aside from ensuring the games load and work.
So far, here the games:
Doom 2
Hexen 1 or 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Quake
Quake 2
Half Life
Unreal Tournament
The game list may change, depending on how well they work in today's environments and we have not discussed maps, if the two out of three will be on one match, etc. But I thought I would at least get this thread made so the inevitable shit talking can commence.

You need to get Interstate '76 back on that list. Aside from it being an awesome game, you guys used to run a clan for it, so its a necessity.
All those games didn't come out that long ago. You're making yourself sound ancient when you really aren't. ;) I used to play all that stuff when it came out too!

Sounds like fun Morbid. I'm a FPS gamer from way back but still play the occasional PC FPS online. I still have fond memories of others brining over their Win 3.1 machines so we could play against each other via a serial connection. When we each had a modem, dialing in to each other was much much better.
Can't wait to see the results of this. Post some videos if you are using FRAPS or the like. I'd love to see some gameplay.

Ancient in gaming years, my man. Kids today don't even know what Interstate 76 is, much less Action Quake. :)
We should all get in on this.

I'm up for it. Hell, I still have my copy of Interstate '76 sitting right here.

Here is the software a friend of mine swears by:
https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en
LogMeIn Hamachi is a VPN service that easily sets up in 10 minutes, and enables secure remote access to your business network, anywhere there's an Internet connection.
It works with your existing firewall, and requires no additional configuration. Hamachi is the first networking application to deliver an unprecedented level of direct peer-to-peer connectivity. It is simple, secure, and cost-effective.
Advantages of LogMeIn Hamachi
LAN over the Internet Arrange multiple computers into their own secure network, just as if they were connected by a physical cable.
Remote Access Remote control any machine on your network with Remote Desktop.
Files and Network Drives Access critical files and network drives.
Zero-configuration Works without having to adjust a firewall or router.
Security Industry leading encryption and authentication.
Cost Effective Basic version is free to use. Premium begins at $4.95/month. (Difference can be seen here (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/advantages.asp). We wont need premium)
But in a nutshell, it will allow us to setup private LAN games over the internet. This should work great for the older games.

Just downloaded a copy. Now I need to find the old games. Not very motivated... trying to put a privacy fence up, and my after-work spare time is devoted to Mass Effect, which, if it had multiplayer, I would KICK YOUR ASS IN!!!! LOL!!!11!! OWNZERZ11!!!11!
Edit: Dude, the Microsoft points system is so fucking lame I just can't stand it. Not only do you have to buy points at pre-set levels, you DON'T get a discount for buying larger amounts of points. AND, the points come in increments that don't go along with the normal cost of items. So, you have to buy 1,000 points at a time, but things cost 400 or 800 points. It is like the fucking hotdogs and buns that comedians poke fun of. I know you can't see how pathetic and shitty this system is, because it is the only system your fanboy ass knows anything about, but if you EVER COME VISIT, I will show you how vastly superior the PSN store is. Shit costs $1.99 and it actually says that it costs $1.99. You go to check out, and it puts $1.99 on your credit card. No wasted points. No disgruntled consumers.
You know what is weird about this generation of consoles? MS and Sony have switched places. The PS2 was a proprietary, hot-running, inferior console with a better game library. The XBox was more open-source, faster, and had a hard drive. Forward a generation and you have an XBox that uses proprietary bullshit (AV connector, hard drive, memory cards, power brick, points system) while the PS3 is open source (supports Linux, swappable 2.5" hard drive, USB, HDMI, card reader, transparent pricing) but has an inferior game library.
Meanwhile, the Wii is just another Gamecube, so nothing changed there but the profits and popularity. How fucking bizarre. Oh, and the PS3 has no RPG's of fame yet, while the 360 has at least three that I want to play! And Final Fantasy on the 360, with no FF at all on the PS3 right now. Too fucking weird.

Dude, I am in NO hurry. Take your time. I just got the thread posted so it was here. We'll keep it small and start with a Doom 2 session. Test out this VPN software.
