An Anchorage woman has been charged with murder nearly seven months after her 4-month-old child died while in her care, Anchorage police said Monday.

A grand jury indicted Raena Miranda, 27, last week on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide after a months-long investigation that began last April, when her baby boy was discovered dead, police Lt. Dave Parker said.

"Basically, it took them a long time to get to the point where they were ready to charge because they had a whole lot of medical testing to do to eliminate any other possibilities for the child's death," Parker said. "It was an extremely difficult investigation, and it involved a great many medical experts."

After responding to a call in the 300 block of Pauline Street in Muldoon on April 14, police learned of the death of 4-month-old Julian Miranda and later determined the child had died as the result of "severe abusive neglect," he said.

Police would not release further details, nor would they elaborate on what "severe abusive neglect" meant, citing concerns that doing so could taint the jury pool. Parker said such neglect could include things like failure to feed a child or not getting a child proper medical care.

"The feeding issue would be one of those," he said. "The child died of severe, abusive neglect. Abuse would be like a head injury or something like that -- that's not neglect. That's direct, physical abuse. ... It was due to neglect that the child had died, which is terrible because, as you understand, that kind of thing is basically reversible anywhere along the way."

According to court records, Miranda has no criminal history in Alaska.

She was arrested Thursday and booked at the Anchorage jail with bail set at $25,000 cash and a third-party custodian requirement.

Her baby died, I am sure, a most painful way...neglect, stemming from starvation and or illness....this baby suffered.

Just die stupid Meth head. You have no respect for life whatsoever, I would mandate sterilization for sure!

Rest in peace baby Julian...sleep with the angels.

Not only did this little one likely die a long and unpleasant death . . . but as an infant it clearly had no idea where the pain was coming from or why. And looked to this woman for help out of instinct - and clearly didn't understand why help wasn't coming.

This is the ultimate betrayal - letting an infant die is always the ultimate betrayal.

I'm getting myself sick right now thinking of what that little newborn must have had racing through it's mind - undeveloped thoughts and undeveloped ideas, but all basically consisting of why? why? why? and help! help! help!

No matter what the law does here, I hope this woman slowly has her conscience erode based on her acts . . .

An Anchorage woman accused of murdering her infant son by starving him to death has made a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide.

Raena Miranda, 28, was sentenced to four years in prison on Nov. 18 for the April 2008 death of her son, 4-month-old Julian.

Miranda, who had a history with the state Office of Children's Services dating back years, was charged with second-degree murder in late 2008. But the medical examiner concluded the boy died of natural causes with no signs of physical abuse.

Miranda's family says she did not kill her baby.

Miranda's mother, Laura Itta, said she doesn't know why the baby failed to thrive but believes he was weak from a change in diet. "Raena shouldn't have taken the plea deal," she said outside the courtroom.

But police say Miranda, who had a drug abuse problem, neglected her baby. They say Miranda wasn't feeding him, and that she left his feeding to his 5- and 7-year-old siblings. Miranda even taught the children to prop up the bottle so the baby didn't need to be hand-fed.

According to prosecutors, Julian was born an average size but weighed 8 pounds at his death.

The medical examiner concluded the baby died of "interstitial pneumonitis," an umbrella term for lung diseases caused by a host of things including exposure to dust, poison, fumes or drugs, according to a state doctor not involved in the case.

A contributing factor to the baby's death was the baby's inability to process a certain kind of fatty acid, but it was not clear from the public records which fatty acid or how severe the baby's disorder was.

The Office of Children's Services would not provide details but gave a broad outline of its interventions with Miranda.

Starting in 2005, OCS intervened four times, including three times that the children were taken into custody because of the mother's drug abuse or the kids not having a caretaker, according to Mike Lesmann, OCS community relations manager.

The last time the state agency saw Julian was on April 3, 2008, when it handed the baby back over to his mother after his father was arrested on a drunk driving charge. The baby died 11 days later.

One of OCS's earlier interventions was in January 2008, when a hospital notified the state that Julian was born with methamphetamine in his system, according to court and state records.

At the time of the baby's death, his siblings also tested positive for methamphetamine, meaning they had recently been in close proximity to the drug, Stanton said.

The 7-year-old had not been attending school regularly.

"Things just kept mounting and mounting and mounting," Stanton said of the police's six-month investigation. "We had enough of all these circumstantial things that would override 'natural causes' as a cause of death. Hopefully, if this did go to jury trial, the citizens of Anchorage would see the photos of Julian and say, 'No. This isn't right.' "

Two of Julian's siblings, now 6 and 8, suffer from depression and anxiety disorders from witnessing the death of their brother, according to their therapists in court affidavits. Both know their mother has blamed them for the death of the baby, for not feeding him properly.

Six months ago, OCS filed a termination of Miranda's parental rights. After prison, she will not be allowed unsupervised contact with children under 16 years old for three years, according to her sentence.

I am confused. The state had to have known the baby was malnourished when they gave him back to her, right? I mean, how much weight could he lose in 11 days, if he only weighed 8 pounds when he died.

How,why and what is the point of starving your baby too death.Does this bitch have a soul? The poor child probably screamed from horrible hunger pains with no one too look too for comfort...:( Throw this bitch in a river and walk away,I dont care what drug or mental issue she has.My son who is 19 months knows when his sister who is 6 months is hungry,She cry":arghs a little and he comes tearing through the house full speed with her bottle..And he is not even 2!
:argh:

Soooo....let me get this straight. The OCS would rather the child be with the mother who has a meth problem than the father who drinks too much. Guess that's the perfect case of "pick your poison".

I can't believe she got the kids back. This is just awful. I hope the older children are in a stable loving environment and getting the help they need dealing with the death of their little brother.

Stupid cow.

I am in total shock with this one. She never should have had custody of those children. Now she is only going to serve 4 years for this. She needs to be sterilized so she can never have children again. There should be no plea bargains allowed when it comes to cases of child abuse/neglect/murder. I agree with the previous posters questioning the fact she was given her baby back and also believe that CPS knew that baby was neglected and malnourished.

Why did she even have custody?
This bitch got 4 years for murdering her baby. The history of neglect charges and multiple times her children were taken should have prevented her from the ability to kill this baby.

I can't even begin to talk about her children "knowing" that she feels they are to blame. I hope her children are not with her family because it sounds as though they are not very helpful in allowing them to overcome their misplaced guilt--they're not putting it where it belongs on the bitch who should have been taking care of her children instead of being doped up to the point that her infant was born with meth in his system and her older children had meth in their bodies from such close exposure.

The only health problem this baby had was a problem with the bitch who gave birth to him. The cure was simple--take care of the child.

Sounds like there were a lot of people in this case that need to be up on charges IMO--and that the truly innocent are the ones who are punished--they were punished first with this bitch despite CPS knowing how they were treated and now they're being pounded with guilt over their infant sibling dying. Since CPS and supposed experts had determined that their home situation was adequate, how the hell are they supposed to know that they're victims, not guilty? How can they ever know that when experience has taught them that it must be THEM since they were not only NOT removed from the situation, but stuck back in it after evaluation and knowledge of the environment?

Stories like this make me feel guilty that I have only saved one child from this kind of death.
(If you knew the woman that gave birth to my daughter, you would have to agree that's where she was headed.)
And at the same time, I am so thankful that my little girl didn't have to suffer very long. The agencies did their job in our case.
It can't be that hard to just hand them over. Just hand them over to the state, let them take their chances in foster care. Their chances are better there that with a parent slowly killing them by starvation. Where does this possessive drive to keep a child that you have no interest in caring for come from? I would think a mother that doesn't bother to feed, love or interact with her own child, would be happy to shove the kid off on someone else.

this is going badly

What is wrong with this bitch's parents? They don't think she did anything? She blames her 5 and 7 year old for not feeding her baby properly? From the pictures it looks like she managed to feed her own face pretty well.

Yet another case where the killer does not take any responsibility, the state does not hold her accountable and her family claims she is innocent. This nasty cow killed this baby, no different than if she beat or shook him to death. Four years and then she is out. Within one year she will be back on meth and public assistance.and pregnant again.

Maybe someone can wait at the prison gate when she is let out and quick pull out her overies?

I am putting her on my mother's day card list! I am going to make her a very "special" card. Argggg!

My daughter was born weighing 6lbs8 , she put on weight very slowly . The dietician said she wasn't absorbing fat , but advised me to continue with the breast feeding and at 4 months I started adding a high calorie mix to her spoon feeds . She only needed it for a few months and now she's a healthy 6 & a 1/2 year old .
It's something that's easily rectified if you just follow the doctor's instructions . Some cunts obviously just can't be bothered , it's too much effort .
