A 31-year-old Concord man is in jail on $60,000 cash bail for allegedly beating his girlfriend's 9-year-old son over two nights. The police arrested Christian Hajnal of Village Street on Friday, shortly after school officials reported the boy's injuries, the police said.
Hajnal was arraigned yesterday in Concord District Court on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree assault.
During one of the nights, Hajnal hit the boy six times, enough that the boy fell out of a wooden kitchen chair and hit his head on the wall, breaking the chair in the process, according to a police affidavit.
The boy suffered a cut above his left eye, a broken blood vessel in his eye, dizziness and a contusion on his back, according to the affidavit. He was treated and released for his injuries.
The boy's mother was working during the alleged assaults and was not aware of the injuries until the police notified her, the affidavit said. Hajnal was baby-sitting the boy at the time and was upset with him because the boy had stolen some money from his mother, the affidavit said.
Hajnal admitted to the police that he had "smacked (the boy) in the back of the head" two or three times, the affidavit said. He also told the police that if they found marks on the boy's face, he had likely caused them, the affidavit said.
The alleged abuse began Wednesday evening after the boy's mother discovered some of her money had been stolen. It worsened the second night, the affidavit said.
Over the two nights, Hajnal hit the boy in the back of his head with an open hand and with his knuckles, the police said. He slapped the boy in the face while he was eating supper, causing the boy to spill his food and stab himself with a fork, the police said. As punishment for that, Hajnal sent the boy to his room to sit on a wooden kitchen chair.
It was in the boy's bedroom that Hajnal allegedly hit the boy enough to knock him off the chair, the police said. Then Hajnal kicked the boy twice in the ribs with his bare foot and threatened to hit him with a piece of the broken chair, the police said. He also threatened to beat the boy with a leather belt and metal belt buckle but said he wouldn't because the boy's mother had forbidden it, the affidavit said.
The boy told the police that Hajnal "told him he would 'do this to (him)' every night when his mother left for work," the affidavit said. Then Hajnal hit the boy three more times in the head, the police said.
When the boy arrived at school Friday morning, the school nurse noticed his injuries and recommended he be evaluated at the hospital. The school also notified the Concord police. The nurse told detectives that the boy's voice was "tremulous" as he described the beating, the affidavit said.
When the police interviewed Hajnal, he said he was "pissed" at the boy for taking the money, the affidavit said. He said he hit the boy in the head to "snap him out of it," the affidavit said. When the boy began crying, Hajnal told him to stop because he didn't want to hear it, the police said.
Hajnal's bail was set yesterday at $10,000 cash for the endangering charge, which is a misdemeanor, and $50,000 cash for the assault charge, a felony.
