TAMPA, FL -- Hillsborough County Animal Services began an investigation Friday after a report of a house so filthy with animal feces and urine the stench was smelled on the street coming from 3015 73 Street North.
Five were arrested Saturday as a result of what investigators found. 11 dogs were suffering from parasites and anemia. The excrement was caked on some of the animals and one dog was given immediate treatment for a possible broken leg.
Two young children were living in the house as well. Marti Ryan with animal services says the Family and Youth Services was contacted after finding the children living in a dirty home. Some of the dogs were pit bull mix and others shepherd/chow mix. County animal services will seek custody of the animals.
The shelter was alerted by the home owner who rented the property to the five suspects. A Realtor checked the property on the owner's behalf and discovered the deplorable condition.
The real estate agent contacted the home owner who called animal services.
Craig Overton, Shelia Overton, Cindy Overton, Irven Brend and Cedric Wilson were arrested and charged with a number of animal cruelty and neglect charges.
Coincidently it is National Animal Shelter week but Hillsborough County Animal Services didn't have much time to celebrate as they took in nearly 100 dogs over the last week. Some of the dogs may be ready for adoption in next Saturday's Pet Adoption Expo at the fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
