ESSEX -- A 22-year-old woman from Essex is facing assault and child cruelty charges for allegedly injuring a 13-month-old child, said Vermont State Police.

Taryn O'Connor was arraigned this morning on charges of cruelty to a child under age 10, aggravated assault, violation of conditions of release and violation of probation.

Police said the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations and state officials responded on Thursday to Fletcher Allen Hospital, where the unidentified child was undergoing emergency brain surgery for severe head trauma.

O'Connor was arrested after a 30-hour investigation by CUSI and the Vermont Department of Children and Families, said police. The investigation determined that O'Connor had been taking care of the the child while the parents were at work, and that the child's injuries were abusive and intentional, police said.

The child remained in critical condition this morning at Fletcher Allen, according to police.

"The defendant eventually admitted to doing this (shaking) to this baby although her version of the events is that she had a horrible day, her children were crying," said Susan Hardin, Chittenden Deputy Prosecutor during the arraignment hearing.

Police say the infant is critically brain injured and fighting for life.

Police say the baby's parents learned of O'Connor's day-care baby-sitting service on Craig's List. But they apparently never knew that O'Connor has a lengthy criminal history and was under court order to have no contact with any children -- even her own -- except under the supervision of the Lamoille Family Center in Hyde Park.

Can I get a WTF here?

You know the past couple of years, I have done some babysitting out of my home and only 1 person has even ever asked for references. It really does amaze me. Thank goodness I'm normal but people you really can't judge a book by its cover. Get references! And don't go to anyone unless you know they have had a background check with the state, as I have.

Considering some of my aquaintances are nannies and I wouldn't want THEM around my children, I insist my employers check references, and in the case of actual full-time employment, a background check.

Taryn O’Connor was sentenced to six to 15 years in prison Wednesday for aggravated assault.

BY DAN MCLEAN, FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • OCTOBER 8, 2009

An Essex woman who had been barred from having unsupervised contact with children and was accused of violently shaking a child in her care last year, agreed to a plea deal Wednesday that will send her to prison for six to 15 years.

Taryn O’Connor, 23, who advertised day care services on the Web site Craigslist, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Vermont District Court in Burlington to a charge of aggravated assault. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a count of cruelty to a child.

O’Connor could be eligible for release after six years, but she would remain under “strict supervision by the Corrections Department,” said defense lawyer Leroy Yoder, who was representing O’Connor.

“She’ll be under supervision for a long time,” he said.

O’Connor, who was handcuffed during the proceeding, also pleaded guilty Wednesday to violating an abuse-prevention order, which carries a up to a year prison. That sentence will run at the same time as the longer term.

O’Connor will be credited with time served since her arrest in November.

Police said O’Connor injured a 13-month-old boy while changing his diaper Nov. 6 and dealing with her own children, a 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son.

O’Connor was looking after the infant while his mother and father were at work, according to court papers. The child, who was “violently shaken,” suffered head and brain injuries and underwent brain surgery, according to court papers.

After the plea bargain was approved, the family of the injured child declined to comment about the deal or the health of the child.

Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan could not be reached for comment. O’Connor was on probation for two 2007 misdemeanor convictions and had another misdemeanor charge pending. One of the conditions she faced from a previous conviction was not to have unsupervised contact with children.

Craiglist is great if you are looking for a bargain on used clothing or an excercise bike. Who the hell wants to find the cheapest, bargain basement babysitter that they possibly can? These parents are morons! They didn't even bother to ask for references or get a criminal background check? That is insane.

I sincerely hope that their little one does not suffer from permanent injuries.

I kind of feel like I need to personally KNOW YOU to leave my kid with you. For years. Even then, I haven't done it. I read here too much.
