Deceased Infant Discovered In Shopping Center's Parking Lot

A witness called police about the baby at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The deceased infant was still warm when emergency crews got to the SaveMart shopping center on the 1600 block of Lander Avenue.

The baby, which appeared to be late- or full-term, was taken to a hospital.

Although crews tried to save the infant, the baby was later pronounced dead.

It is so wrong that a birth-date and death-date be the same day of a babies life.

Still warm..."this little one was trying to survive. It must have fallen into deep sleep to never wake again. ~sigh~, at least passing in slumber with no pain...I hope.

I found another article about this subject. It doesn't give the sex of the baby but it does give more information about where this took place. It also mentions that there are video cameras in the area and they may actually contain an image of the "mother".

It just breaks my heart every time I read about these poor babies being thrown away. I will NEVER understand how anyone could do such a thing to such a small defenseless being. Babies are meant to be loved and cuddled, not put in the trash. It's not right that this baby lived and died unwanted & unloved. I would've wanted her, I would've loved her; so many other people would've, too. That baby could've been the joy of someone's life even if her biological parents didn't want her.

That STUPID, SELFISH "mother" needs to be hunted down and punished. Mandatory sterilization is called for. This woman doesn't deserve to be able to have any more children.

Jessica Mae Betts of Turlock was booked on suspicion of first-degree murder at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center in Modesto.

Someone walked into the Police Department on Thursday morning and gave police a tip that led them to Betts. They brought her in by 3 p.m.

Officials said they were confident the child was not stillborn, but gave no details on forensic evidence. The district attorney's office has reviewed the evidence, police said.

Capt. Rob Jackson said Betts was stoic and didn't become upset during her two-hour interview at the Turlock Police Department.

That was a pretty touching story especially after reading about the baby not making it. Jeff Merrow is a good man and it was, kind of a fluke he was there as well. Ok, I dont believe it was a fluke , I think God sent that baby to Jessica Mae Betts and she decided to discard his gift into the trash. For what ever reason Jeff was sent there to find it.

The mother of the teenager suspected of dumping her dead baby in a trash bin last month provided the tip that led police to her daughter.

Jessica Mae Betts' mother also told police she found her daughter's diaries telling of a past pregnancy, the birth of a child and its "possible disposal" in 2007.

Betts' mother, Lillie Mae, suspected her daughter was pregnant again and involved in abandoning a child after reading a newspaper story about a baby girl left in a Dumpster.

Lillie Betts went to police less than two weeks later.

DNA tests confirmed that the baby, named Maria Mae Betts, was Jessica Betts' daughter.

Investigators are looking into other evidence, including the diaries, but said there is only one homicide investigation in progress.

Jessica Betts told police she delivered a baby girl in the bathroom of her boyfriend's house, wrapped the newborn in a pair of purple sweatpants and a towel, and drove to Save Mart in her boyfriend's white Chevrolet, where she cried as her baby's breathing slowed and then stopped.

Lillie Betts told police her daughter had gained a "drastic" amount of weight but refused to take a pregnancy test. Friends of Jessica Betts also approached Lillie Betts and congratulated her on becoming a grandmother.

When Lillie Betts confronted her daughter, Jessica Betts denied any involvement.

It is not clear from the documents how long Jessica Betts has lived in a single-family home with her boyfriend and his father.

Jessica Betts told police her baby was alive when she gave birth, and she tried to conceal the baby's cries so those in the house wouldn't discover she had been pregnant.

When her boyfriend, 22-year-old Paul Alexander Aguiar, questioned her about the large amount of blood in the bathroom, she told him she was menstruating. Aguiar told police he didn't know she was pregnant or had given birth.
