http://i34.tinypic.com/1zwomiw.jpgA 19-year-old woman is accused this morning of abandoning her infant daughter so she could go drinking with friends.
Gresham police said Gloria C. Moore went out with friends last Thursday and left her 10-month-old alone in a playpen. The girl was abandoned for six hours. When finally found, she was in a puddle of her own urine, police said.
Moore is being held on a Multnomah County jail this morning and faces accusations of child neglect.
Police were called to the scene of the Berry Ridge Apartments in the 2700 block of W. Powell Boulevard early Friday morning.
Moore had gotten into a shouting match with her friends, police said. The friends thought Moore had left the child in the care of a sitter.
Moore at first refused to permit her friends into her apartment, and when she finally did, they found the child alone in her playpen.http://www.oregonlive.com/gresham/index.ssf/2008/11/10/
That article makes it sound like her friends turned her in. I hope they at least "intended to":
Last Friday, Gresham Police responded to reports of a female screaming for help in the parking lot of the Berry Ridge Apartments. Officers were told that multiple neighbors had heard a female yelling that someone was trying to take her daughter.
Officers arrived in the area and located a vehicle that had just left the scene. Inside the car was 19-year-old Gloria Celeste Moore who was the mother of a 10-month-old female child.
During the investigation, police learned Moore had left her 10-month-old alone in a playpen at her apartment for over 6 hours while she went drinking with friends. When the evening came to a close, the friends became suspicious of Moore's behavior because she did not want them to come into her apartment with her.
All of Moore's friends knew that she had a 10-month-old child, but Moore had assured them a baby sitter was watching the infant. They did not believe her and eventually forced her to allow them into the apartment to see the child.
Inside, Moore's friends found the little girl in a puddle of her own urine, alone in a playpen. Moore's friends thought that Moore may be in danger from the father of the child, so they attempted to convince her to come with them to Oregon City where she would be safe for the evening.
During that conversation in the parking lot, tempers flared and police were called by neighbors.http://www.kxl.com/tabid/72/itemid/16710/Mother-arrested-after-leaving-infant.aspx
At least the neighbors have some common sense.
